Description
“Venerable vines, fastidious viticulture and cutting-edge winemaking kit. It’s a killer combination, and the reason why Yangarra is producing some of the best wines in the Vale right now.” – Max Allen, The Weekend Australian.
This cutting edge McLaren Vale producer is making delicious energetic estate grown wines from it’s biodynamic vineyards. We have been bowled over by every wine in their line up … a rare occurrence in this business!
2021 Yangarra Estate Vineyard Noir is a blend of 32% Grenache Noir, 20% Carignan, 16% Mourvèdre, 14% Cinsault, 13% Shiraz, 5% Counoise.
Grenache is the emerging hero variety of McLaren Vale. Traditional blends of Grenache from our region generally focus on the varieties Grenache (G), Shiraz (S) and Mourvèdre (M), and thus the term “GSM”. In 2008, we began planting a few obscure Southern Rhône and Priorat varieties in pursuit of producing a traditional old-world Grenache blend. Many of these varieties, including Grenache, have a blanc (white), gris (grey) and noir (black) expression of the variety, which lead to calling this wine the Noir.
From the winemaker about the 2021 vintage: “We had a very favourable growing season, with good winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit set period and continued spring rainfall to ensure a healthy canopy. Pleasing yields showed good balance between vine vigour and moderate berry size. The ripening period that began late January was very cool, with some welcome rainfall in mid-February. This delayed harvest, with the cold nights and mild sunny days, produced optimal fruit ripeness and intensity. The freshness and bright natural acidity of the fruit were a real feature.”
“A progressive take on a French classic, Noir brings Grenache together with its lesser-known red partners, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise, in a celebration of the southern Rhône on our estate. Lifted fragrance, with bright flavours and vibrant acidity, this wine shows these ancient newcomers also thrive in our elevated corner of McLaren Vale.”
91 points, Ned Goodwin MW for James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion for the 2020 “… Biodynamic writ large, showing holistic handling with intelligence. Pour big. Drink large. Raspberry, violet and briary sap. Everyday wine from the heavens.”
93 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front for 2019 “This is a savoury, mid-weight, well structured and well-fruited red with berry, licorice, iodine and floral notes curling persuasively throughout. The polish here, the tannin, the mouthfeel and the finish; all are top notch. In fact if you want to just lose yourself in a wine, this wine is a good candidate. Value is high.”
