Description

Established is 1831, Bodega Colome is one of Argentina’s most esteemed and oldest producers located in Argentina’s region of Salta in the Upper Calchaqui Valley, home to the highest vineyards in the world at altitudes of 2300-3311 metres. Semi arid climate with warm days and cold nights is ideal for viticulture. Intense UV light with altitude results in thick grape skin development to protect against sun. The Hess Family bought this estate in 2001.

100% biodynamic vineyard from high in the mountains of Salta (vineyards are between 2400 and 3000 metres above sea level) bulk of fruit comes from estate vineyard (150 yrs of age at 2400 metres-trunks of these incredible ancient gnarly vines remind me of olive trees!).

Extraordinary consistency in growing seasons from this fine producer.

Bright and intense in colour with beautiful aromas of blackberries, red fruits and exotic floral notes, this wine delivers aromatics that entice the senses. A full lush entry of ripe and rich black fruit surrounds spiced oak notes and hints of pepper. Fresh acidity supports big, bold tannins and wonderful complexity. It’s all about alpine freshness and purity of fruit in this delicious vibrant medium bodied malbec…. 2021 has landed and is back to tip top form.. Gorgeous

Reviews of 2020:

93 points Tim Atkin: “Our classic Malbec,” is how Thibaut Delmotte describes this blend of four vineyards at different altitudes – Altura Máxima, Colomé, El Arenal and La Brava. Wonderfully juicy and scented, it’s the perfect introduction to the variety, with intense damson, blueberry and wild thyme flavours, palate-caressing tannins and a tangy finish. ”

92 points Vinous Media : “The 2020 Malbec Estate from the Calchaquí Valley, Salta was aged for 15 months in a quarter new barrels. A purplish ebony in the glass. The concentrated, intense nose offers notes of fruit jam with plum, spice, chutney and balsamic aromas. In the mouth, it makes a plush entrance with good vigor, a juicy flow, refined, reactive tannins and a bold expression. A balanced but powerful high altitude red, the combination of different vineyards from across the valley makes for a complex profile. (JH,9/2022)

91 points, James Suckling, March 2022 : “Fresh herbs, blackberries with some cumin and coffee here. A medium-to full-bodied red, packed with juicy and dense tannins.”

“Attractively concentrated style here with aromas and flavors deep in the plum and blackberry zone. Full and firm palate. Really flavorful and bold style. Drink or hold.”
91 points, Wine Advocate Nov 2022 ” The clean, varietal and fruit-driven 2020 Estate Malbec mixes grapes from different terroirs and altitudes where they have vineyards: 1,800, 2,300, 2,600 and 3,111 meters! The wine is ripe at 14.9% alcohol but feels very harmonious and balanced, clean and focused. It matured in French oak barrels, 10% of them new, for 15 months. 280,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021. (LG)”
