Description
Established is 1831, Bodega Colome is one of Argentina’s most esteemed and oldest producers located in Argentina’s region of Salta in the Upper Calchaqui Valley, home to the highest vineyards in the world at altitudes of 2300-3311 metres. Semi arid climate with warm days and cold nights is ideal for viticulture. Intense UV light with altitude results in thick grape skin development to protect against sun. The Hess Family bought this estate in 2001.
100% biodynamic vineyard from high in the mountains of Salta (vineyards are between 2400 and 3000 metres above sea level) bulk of fruit comes from estate vineyard (150 yrs of age at 2400 metres-trunks of these incredible ancient gnarly vines remind me of olive trees!). Higher altitudes offer much more sun, much less UV protection and produce a thicker skinned grape that delivers a more robust taste with fresh acidity to support it.
Bright and intense in colour with beautiful aromas of blackberries, red fruits and exotic floral notes, this wine delivers aromatics that entice the senses. A full lush entry of ripe and rich black fruit surrounds spiced oak notes and hints of pepper. Fresh acidity supports big, bold tannins and wonderful complexity. It’s all about alpine freshness and purity of fruit in this delicious vibrant medium bodied malbec.
Extraordinary consistency in growing seasons from this fine producer, the 2022 is terrific.
90 points, Wine Enthusiast “Aromas of bramble fruit with a light note of violets form the bouquet. The palate is abundant in herbs and features optimal acidity and soft but firm tannins, holding black-fruit flavors and hints of tobacco on the midpalate.”
