Description

Villa Argiano lay claim to being the oldest wine estate in Montalcino, located below Saint’Angelo in Colle, some 8km from the famous wine town. Built in 1581 the Villa passed through many sets of hands over the centuries and in 1992, the current owner Noemi Marone Cinzano purchased the property. In the past the renown consultant, Giacomo Tachis, the man behind Sassacaia, was involved in the project and the Bordeaux varieties were planted but today Bordeaux-trained winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers holds the reins. The estates range of wines is superb and includes Suolo, their silky Sangiovese and stunning Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.

100% Sangiovese. “Argiano makes their Rosso to be a fresh and fruity wine for earlier consumption. The fruit hails from a portion of the estate vineyards with a higher clay content that helps them to achieve this style. The wine refines for seven months in large, neutral barrels and two months in concrete prior to bottling.” Vinous Media

About the 2022 vintage from the winery:  “The year started with a fairly mild winter and infrequent, not very substantial rainfall. Despite the fairly rainless spring, the vines sprouted about 7-10 days earlier than normal, and growth was somewhat uneven but very composed, without vegetative explosions due to the heat of spring, a sign of great basal soil balance. From mid-May the temperatures rose above average until they reached temperatures considered summer by June, veraison began on August 18, a week early, the same time we started. At the end of August, we saw the first thunderstorms, which really re-established the situation, allowing the plants to ripen their bunches. The quality recorded was very high, very healthy bunches without any sort of mould or disease. Very good must concentration.

“Fresh and vibrant, red berry aromas with a hint of citrus and spices on the finish. Harmonious and savory, it is a balanced, gastronomic, and versatile wine.” 14.5% alc.

90 points, Eric Guido, Vinous “Aromatically intense, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino holds nothing back. It’s vividly fruit forward yet with a burst of wild herbs and exotic spice to balance. This is harmonious and pure on the palate, with ample energy and verve as a cascade of crisp wild berry fruits swirl throughout. Only gently tannic yet full of youthful tension, the 2022 finishes fresh potent.”
