Kym Teusner has turned me right around with this fine cabernet (have never been convinced about Barossa cabernet until now!). Fruit sourced from dry grown vineyard in High Eden Valley (500 metres) to produce cabernet with cascading fruit, layers and fine tannins, structure and texture. Stars aligned for this fine cabernet and we love the price!
Winemaker Kym Teusner about this wine: “Barossa Shiraz holds uber celebrity status, meaning Cabernet Sauvignon is often overlooked. It’s hugely under-rated and there’s a stack I’d be happy to put on the tasting bench to challenge that notion…
“Approximately 40% of this wine originates from David Forrest’s vineyard high up in the Eden Valley. At around 400 metres above sea level, one of the highest points in the Barossa region, this vineyard produces truly exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon – indeed some of the best I have had the pleasure to work with. It’s pretty tough country up there and the lean bony soils keep the yields low and the berries small… hallmarks of flavour intensity. To create a slightly richer style, 60% of the blend is sourced from Cabernet vineyards in the Barossa Valley, namely the Riebke’s vineyards at Ebenezer as well as our Hoffman vineyard near Tanunda and Semmler Vineyard in Lyndoch.
“The Barossa’s 2022 vintage was generally mild, with the early growing season punctuated by light Spring rains, providing essential moisture for vine growth. As summer progressed, the absence of extreme heat ensured excellent acid retention and the development of well-balanced flavours. The mild autumn extended the ripening period, contributing to optimal grape maturity for Cabernet Sauvignon in both the Barossa and Eden Valleys. In summary, the weather during the 2022 vintage provided favourable conditions, producing wines rich in varietal character and pure flavours of the Barossa.
“The Barossa Valley components provide great structure and power – ideal partners to the classic Cabernet elegance and sweet cassis core from the Eden Valley fruit. Furthermore, the Barossa Valley fruit provides a lovely chocolate, rich fruit backdrop with delicious savoury tannins, whilst the Eden Valley fruit takes the lead with lifted varietal aromatics and blue fruits, creating an elegant wine full of vibrancy. A true gentleman of the Barossa.”
92 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “A deep crimson, cassis-rich Barossa cabernet sauvignon with thick-shouldered blackberry and black cherry fruits that presents great value for money and plush varietal drinking. Not much on the herbaceous side here. It’s more a slow-moving freight train of cassis and kirsch, packed with spice, licorice and subtle dried herb and cedar notes, with a sense of freshness and a cloud of powdery tannins on the way out.”
