Description
Crawford River wines from Henty in South Western Victoria are crafted exclusively from hand-picked and selected fruit grown at their estate vineyard, whereupon they are vinified and bottled on site. The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to detail. Patience and time are of the essence in their winery.
Winemaker Belinda Thompson has been honing her craft with Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2015 is excellent.
From the winery about the 2015 release: “Intensely perfumed with cherries, dark plum, mulberry, spices and dark chocolate, this wine is captivating from the outset. The red & black fruits shine throughout the palate and it is balanced with elegant, fine tannins and complimentary oak. The graphite-like quality of the ironstone that these vines have their roots in is evident along with the other mineral elements so often seen in our wines. Wonderfully even and long, the natural acidity lends balance and terrific persistence. It will surely continue to develop well in bottle and will benefit from decanting in the early years of its life.”
“As usual, each individual block was separately hand picked and fermented in open fermenters. De-stemmed only (no crush). 5-8 day cold soak was carried out prior to fermentation with neutral yeast. The wines were then pressed to tank and settled prior to being racked to barrel for malolactic fermentation. 35% of this Cabernet was left in the fermentation vessel and sealed for a period of extended maceration of 8 weeks prior to pressing. No additions. No added acid, not fined or cold stabilised. Coarse filtered to bottle. Tartrates may have settled, which is a natural and normal process. 2 years in French Oak – mostly old. Bottled in September 2017.

This 2015 cabernet is the result. Must be considered too early for middle age, such is the taut, coiled profile. Loves a good, long airing before unleashing violets, blackcurrant, tobacco leaf, cedar and red earth. Savoury tannins build a strong foundation.”

Earthy in the palate, dark plum, soy sauce, new leather and more mint/eucalyptus lending freshness. It’s smooth, rolls around the palate with complexity, density, ease and interest. A really serious, mellow, lovely, moody red.”
