Description
Second label of Yarra Yering made by Sarah Crowe, James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year.
The Warramate vineyard was first planted in 1969 on a spectacular north-facing slope overlooking the central Yarra Valley. The site adjoins the Yarra Yering vineyard located above. On the other side of Maddens Lane, there is Yeringberg and Mount Mary. Pedigree in spades here in the Yarra Valley’s finest dirt.
About this wine from the winemaker: “60% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot 15% Malbec. Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 1970 (clone unknown) and again when the vineyard was expanded in 2000 (SA125 clone). Some Merlot was available post blending our Yarra Yering wines and so we were able to utilize that here to build depth to the palate. Recent plantings of Malbec on the Warramate vineyard were undertaken because we love what Malbec brings to our other Cabernet blends, a whole lot of energy!
“All fruit was handpicked then destemmed directly to a series of 600kg fermenters. The Cabernet Sauvignon berries are crushed to aid in the extraction of tannins, Merlot was a whole berry ferment for plushness as was the Malbec. Fermentation on skins with gentle hand plunging twice a day aids in the gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tactile palate components. Some post ferment maceration builds complexity into the wine. Maturation in small French oak barrels for 15 months.
“Black mulberries and blueberry fruits with some bramble lift, a medium-bodied classic claret style. The succulent jubey fruit layered palate with some aniseed spice complexity and lovely chalky tannins. There is a brightness to the acid energy that underscores a wine of fruit purity and finesse.”
94 points, Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion “A deep-ish crimson red. Another successful, vibrant fruit-driven red from Warramate. Aromas of freshly picked cherries and a hint of bell pepper and cedar lead onto the medium-bodied, quite delicious and fine-boned palate. Ready to trot, but all good if you still have some in the cellar four to six years from now.”
93 points, Gabrielle Poy, The Real Review “A lovely mix of vanilla, spiced plums and violets on the nose. Flavours of lead pencil, raspberries and rosemary join the palate. This wine offers a velvety richness. It’s composed and flows across the palate, where a spine of tannins gently unfurls. It has class.”
