Description

Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) have come up trumps again with this impressive vintage.

About this wine from the winemakers: This time honoured blend is Sons of Eden’s offering to Zephyrus, Greek God of the West Wind, who is often depicted as a horse due to the speed attributed to this majestic animal. The vineyards of the Greater Barossa are regularly buffeted by cooling Westerly winds creating an ideal temperature range in which to slowly ripen.

“Sourced from fruit grown throughout the Barossa region, this wine is a blend of 10 unique vineyard sites. A combination of cooler climate Eden Valley Shiraz (54%) and warmer climate Barossa Valley Shiraz (46%) work in unison to create a complex, well-balanced wine.

“Using an array of fermentation techniques, all involving extended skin contact and gentle hand-plunging. Each of the fermentations retained varying levels of whole-bunch fruit clusters from 10 to 35%, then after 12-18 days on skins each ferment was pressed into a mix of new (35%) and conditioned French oak hogsheads. After a maturation of 16 months the wine was blended, naturally clarified and bottled without finings or filtration.

“Deep crimson in colour displaying vibrant wild berry and red-spice aromas. The attractive palate displays concentrated berry fruits with fine enduring tannins and finishes with vibrancy and freshness. A modern style Barossa Shiraz which will mature beautifully for many years to come. “

Fabulous wine .. unbeatable for quality and value. Don’t miss out on a case of this.

95 Points, David Sly, Decanter  “Rich, plush and confident, this makes a lavish statement about celebrating opulent velvety texture. The marriage of mostly old-vine Shiraz from 10 different sites highlights the distinct personalities of warmer Barossa Shiraz (56%) with cooler parcels from elevated Eden Valley sites. A combination of techniques during ferments includes some components with up to 35% whole-bunch clusters, and extended skin contact to amplify cohesive textural qualities. The flavour marriage is sweet and luscious, ripe red berries rolling over plump purple fruit, and the drying tannins that shape a precise ending will also ensure a long cellaring life.”

95 Points, Dave Brookes Halliday Wine CompanionShiraz from a combination of seven vineyards: 54/46% Eden Valley/Barossa Valley. Whole bunch varied by parcel from 10% to 35%; 16 months’ maturation in French oak, 16% new. Deep crimson in the glass with aromas of blackberry, satsuma plum, black cherry and blueberry over hints of baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, violets, vanillin oak, panforte, roasting meats, some light crushed herbs and earth. Full bodied, with an extended velvety travel across the palate, superfine, powdery tannins and a bright black cherry skin acidity. Impressive!”

95 points, Ryan Montgomery, James SucklingDark-fruited and spicy aromas of blackberries, plums, black pepper, cloves, anise and earth. The palate is full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a dense, textural mouthfeel. Generous and structured, with a long, savory finish. A classic Barossa shiraz with balance, depth and aromatic lift from this cool vintage.”
