Description

Flametree Wines has had a meteoric rise to become one of the star wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Under the skilled winemaking of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate) the quality of wines are impressive across the board.
James Halliday … “Flametree, owned by the Towner family (John, Liz, Rob and Annie), has had extraordinary success since its first vintage in 2007. The usual practice of planting a vineyard and then finding someone to make the wine was turned on its head: a state-of-the-art winery was built, and grape purchase agreements signed with growers in the region. Show success was topped by the winning of the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its 2007 Cabernet Merlot. If all this were not enough, Flametree secured the services of winemaker Cliff Royle.

About the 2024 from the winemaker:  “52% Sauvignon Blanc, 48% Semillon.  Individual night harvests were crushed, chilled and pressed into tank for a 3-4 day settling period. Batches were then racked and warmed before either going into barrel (stainless or oak) to be inoculated using selected yeast strains. 10% of juice was fermented with grape solids in new Bordeaux coopered French oak. The lees were stirred weekly for 10 weeks and then racked on light lees for a further 1-2 months whilst receiving first sulphur additions. The time on lees work has resulted in some lovely textural elements that perfectly complement the citrus fruit flavours.”

“The nose shows the strength of the Semillon in 2024, loads of lemon, lime, herbs, jalapeno and grapefruit. The Sauvignon Blanc displays classic Margaret River guava, lemongrass, lychee and elderflower. The lychee notes and white nectarine provide a burst of flavour on the palate whilst the grape solids and barrel ferment add complex savoury notes and minerality. Powerful grape fruit and jalapeno notes come through on the palate showing the strength of Semillon in 2024. This wine is textured and powerful but still displays fine acidity. The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon will drink well over the warmer months with or without food and provide some short term reward for cellaring up to 2-3 years.”

A cracking Margaret River white here .. gorgeous depth of fruit, complexity and balance. Absolutely delicious!

91 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Grassy notes on the nose, a good fleshiness to the fruit on the palate, and a sound/juicy/mouthwatering quality to the finish. This has been well put together, and works nicely.”

90 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine CompanionThis brings together the best of both varieties, morphing them into one harmonious drink. Tropical fruit tempered by citrus, so think feijoa, passionfruit and pith with lemon juice and zest, some grapefruit too. Spicy with sliced galangal and snips of fresh herbs. And, yes, very refreshing and likeable.”
