Description
Crawford River wines from Henty in South Western Victoria are crafted exclusively from hand-picked and selected fruit grown at their estate vineyard, whereupon they are vinified and bottled on site. The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to detail. Patience and time are of the essence in their winery.
James Halliday on Crawford River: ” .. is ideally suited to the growing and making of diamond-like rieslings of towering longevity … My love affair with Crawford River Riesling began many years ago, and burns as brightly today as it did when I first tasted it.”
The vines for this wine were planted in 2000 and this has always been produced separately to the old block which was planted in 1975. The Crawford River vineyard lies at the alluvial edge of a volcanic lava flow. The 11.5 Ha vineyard has its roots in an unusually complex, mineral-rich soil base. Gravelly, friable, basalt loam overlays permeable clay which in turn lies above a limestone base created by an ancient, risen seabed.
From the winemaker …”After 12 years of making this wine, we continue to see a structural and textural difference between our older vines and the younger block and so we continue to make the ‘young vines riesling’, now identifiable to so many of our clients.”

“The fruit is carefully hand harvested and taken to the winery in pristine condition. For the ‘Young Vines ’ we whole bunch press some fruit in addition to crushing some, this adds a more fruit forward element on the nose and front palate. The juice goes straight into tank where it is settled for four days, it is then racked to remove it from gross lees prior to fermentation. Fermentation starts soon after and care is taken to keep it cool, around 14°C. After fermentation is complete the wine is held on fine lees for a minimum of 8 weeks – this is very important for the textural element of the wine. A hallmark of our Riesling.”
About the 2021 release from the winemaker: “A deep, yellow citrus spectrum is the driving force behind this wine. Elements of white florals, Meyer lemon zest and honeydew melon flow throughout, providing freshness and flavour intensity. A plush, textured palate flows seamlessly from start to finish, with a citrus note providing a clean, balanced finish. Screwcap. Limited production.”
93 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Limey crunch, ginger and lemon tea, frangipani and jasmine scents. Right on. Flavours in that arena with a huge sense of freshness, energy and crispness. That being said a generosity too, lots of flavour, high drinkability and general charm. What a ripper of a drink this is. Mainlines riesling and deliciousness.”
Reviews of 2020: 95 points, Jeni Port for Hallidays 2022 Australian Wine Companion “A combination of crushed and whole-bunch fruit, neutral yeast, fermentation in stainless steel, 3 months on lees prior to racking and blending. Not fined. So youthful, so fresh in a squeezed juice kind of way. Lemon jelly crystals, lemon drop, grapefruit pith, orange peel, lime blossom, in scent and on the palate. Nice texture in building phase. But, as usual, the co-star with equal billing in this production is the crunchy, tangy acidity.”
