Description
Tellurian Wines certainly is a rising star of Victoria’s Heathcote wine region renowned for Shiraz. Established in 2002 by Ian Hopkins and planting vineyards on western slopes of Mt Camel range overlooking township of Tolleen. Since first vintage produced in 2008 they have certainly hit the ground running!
The ancient deep rich Cambrian soils of Heathcote and meticulous attention in the vineyard and winery under Tobias Ansted since 2006 are paying dividends – winning the coveted 5 star winery rating by James Halliday’s Wine Companion.
A blend of Marsanne, Fiano and Riesling, this is a very smart white brimming with zesty fruit, and texture.
From the winery: “Tellurian Blanc is a versatile white with fresh aromatics and lovely texture. A luscious blend of three varieties which grow beautifully in our sunny days and cool, calm nights. Marsanne brings expressive fruit with fiano and riesling contributing aromatics, texture and fresh acidity.
The warm dry conditions for 2018 continued into the 2019 growing season. Low rainfall over winter, followed with a dry spring, and hot summer. Vintage commenced in the third week of February, consistent with average start dates, and after looking like we would have a quick, condensed harvest, conditions cooled and the vintage extended slightly longer than the average.
Individual grape varieties were picked separately and gently whole bunch pressed prior to settling. The majority of the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks with a smaller portion in older French oak. The wine remained on yeast lees with regular stirring for three months
Pale straw in colour. Aromas of green apple and pear, combine with a hint of herbal, cut grass, perfumed notes. The medium bodied palate has expressive flavours of tropical fruit and nashi pear, with hints of spice, and jasmine. The soft texture and slightly waxy characters combine with clean acidy to provide a fresh finish.’
91 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Blend of marsanne, fiano and riesling out of Heathcote. Lovely wine. Real interest. Textural. Stoney. It’s pushed with stonefruit-like flavour but there are honeysuckle, spice and mineral characters aplenty. Grippy and dry on the finish. If you called it savoury no one would bat an eye. It’s good.”
