‘Someone asked me the other day something to the tune of ‘who are the next generation of newer generation producers who will truly create a legacy in Australian wine … I would put Ravensworth and Bryan Martin firmly in the list. No misses from him. Building a formidable argument to prestige.‘ Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.
‘As a talented food writer, cook and forager, Bryan Martin thinks deeply about textures and flavours. This combined with over a decade’s experience at Clonakilla, has resulted in a suite of distinctive Ravensworth wines’ Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine.
Bryan Martin was assistant winemaker at Clonakilla for over 20 years up until 2019 when he left to focus solely on his and his wife Jocelyn’s number one passion – Ravensworth Wines, also in Murrumbateman high country near Canberra. He is passionate about food, an enthusiastic cook (as highlighted in his beautiful, evocative labels featured above!) always experimenting, trying new things and adopts the same philosphy with his wines – no additions, wild yeasts (natural winemaking, organically grown philosophy), he picks early to maintain natural freshness and acidity. His wines are about flavour and texture .. cool climate viticulture at its finest!
Clonakilla has often been thought as the leading winery in this region but Ravensworth has gained much success and critical praise including winning the International Riesling Challenge in 2012 and in 2015 he was runner up Winemaker of the Year for Gourmet Traveller Wine.
About this wine from the winemaker: “Fiano is now well and truly part of our regional collection. It’s the perfect Italian variety to be grown in nearby Hilltops.
Fiano has the ability to produce excellent wine from whatever the weather conditions throw at it and you still have this lovely dry wine filled with citrus and pear with dashes of honeysuckle and spice. It’s just the perfect everyday dry white wine that has a tingling acidity and a light salty finish.”
93 points, Mike Bennie “Ripper drink. Settles into a savoury hum yet has the tonic water and pear needed to make it fresh and fruity, a touch pleasingly bitter, balanced in its elements. Scents of hay and lightly salted cashew, lemon blossom, nashi pear, lemon thyme and ginger. Flavours more in that pear/tonic water zone, as said before, though the finish rolls into a pleasing haze of texture and a saline-nutty undertow. Great weight to flood the senses, a huge sense of charm. This gets the motors running.”
