Description
“Venerable vines, fastidious viticulture and cutting-edge winemaking kit. It’s a killer combination, and the reason why Yangarra is producing some of the best wines in the Vale right now.” – Max Allen, The Weekend Australian.
This cutting edge McLaren Vale producer is making delicious energetic estate grown wines from it’s biodynamic vineyards. We have been bowled over by every wine in their line up … a rare occurrence in this business!
From the winemaker: “Shiraz from our Estate vineyard adopts more of a cooler climate expression than the typical McLaren Vale style thanks to the vineyards elevation and the cooling night breezes from the nearby Southern Lofty, but retains concentration and complexity.”
From the old-world Rhône Syrah to the South Australian red sweetheart, Shiraz evolves once again in the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs. Sourced from six unique blocks on our elevated site, the elegant Yangarra Shiraz is shaped by its connection to the sand and ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation beneath. Prepare for the unexpected.
2021 has just arrived following an exceptional growing season. TOP RATED SHIRAZ Halliday Wine Companion 2024 & 97 POINTS – James Halliday, August 2023
A favourable growing season, with good winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit set period and continued spring rainfall. Vines showed good balance of shoot vigour and moderate berry size. The ripening period that began late January was very cool, with some welcome rainfall in mid-February. The cold nights and mild sunny days in March slowed sugar accumulation, resulting in excellent fruit ripeness and intensity.
Sourced from six blocks within the estate. Approximately 50% on sand, 50% on ironstone. Destemmed and selectively sorted. 50% whole berries. Wild yeast ferment. Open fermenters and on skins for up to 20 days. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. No pressings are used in this wine. Ѐlevage on lees in 25% new, remainder 1 to 3 year French oak puncheons for 12 months.
97 points, Halliday Wine Companion “From the Blewitt Springs single-vineyard estate on sand and ironstone soils. It wasn’t entirely a surprise that McLaren Vale’s first-among-equals winery should have made this gorgeously succulent wine, but I couldn’t help but consulting the thesaurus to be sure ‘succulent’ covered the field. The entry reads: ‘juicy, moist, luscious, soft, tender, mouth-watering, appetising, flavoursome, tasty, delicious.”
