About this wine from the Winemaker: “Our Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre blend is inspired by the traditional estate blends of the southern Rhône. The Grenache is sourced from a combination of young and old bush vines. We select the most elegant and perfumed Shiraz and add Mourvèdre for fragrance and solid tannin structure.
“The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we were pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.
“42% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, 25% Mourvèdre. Each variety handled separately. Destemmed and selectively sorted in the winery. 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast ferment. Each variety has a unique maceration, however a unifying principle of a very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap, for a minimum of 14 days. Extended maceration for some portions of Grenache. The wine was matured in a mixture of old French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora for 11 months.”
Huon Hooke ..“Yangarra Estate is in the Blewitt Springs locality of McLaren Vale where the Rhone Valley grape varieties thrive on the poor. sandy soils. The big gun is a magnificent pure grenache called High Sands. but it’s $110 a bottle, which makes this look even better value.”
New vintage just arrived! 93 points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review “Ink black core into a deep purple toned rim. Blackberry, broken dark slate and pastrami aromatics. Full bodied and powerful with dark fruit intensity driving it. With that fruit there’s ample savoury complexity as well, dark minerals and peppered beef undertone. A subtle acid lift ensures that power doesn’t sit heavily and the ripe tannins drive the finish very long and leave a supple dryness lingering. With food this will step up even further.” Feb 2024.
Previous 2021 vintage – 97 Points, James Halliday, Top Rated Grenache Blend in 2024 Australian Wine Companion “A single-vineyard Blewitt Springs blend of 53/33/14% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre. Planted on sand and ironstone soils, the grenache hand picked from bush vines planted in 1946. This is a serious GSM in every way. It’s very intense and complex, but it’s also seamless and composed, with an orchestra of flavours at its disposal. If this were made in the Rhône, Robert Parker et al. would be going nuts, amongst other things extolling its longevity. As it is, the price here is almost impossible to understand. Black, red and blue berries with spices from Asia and South America.”
