Description

Second label of Yarra Yering made by Sarah Crowe, James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year.

The Warramate vineyard was first planted in 1969 on a spectacular north-facing slope overlooking the central Yarra Valley – the vineyard literally abuts the Yarra Yering vineyard located above. On the other side of Maddens Lane, there is Yeringberg and Mount Mary. Pedigree in spades here in the Yarra Valley’s finest dirt.

50+year old low yielding vines are delivering fabulous results. Rumour has it some declassified Yarra Yering No 2 fruit goes into this wine too!

About this wine from the winemaker 2022: “The grapes that make up this wine are a blend of the 1970 “old vine” original plantings as well as some more modern clones planted with the expansion of the vineyard in 2000; three distinct Shiraz clones make up this blend; SA1127, 1654, ESA3021.

“The majority of fruit was destemmed gently to retain many whole berries to a series of small 600kg fermenters. Occasional use of 20% whole bunch inclusion to some fermenters brings a fruit succulence and a stalk lift to the nose and a welcome tannin presence to the palate. Hand plunged gently to aid in the gentle extraction of colour, flavour and tactile palate components. Maturation time in barrel was 15 months prior to bottling. All 228L oak barriques, 100% French with 10% new barrels.

“Violets and ripe plum fruits make for a generously fruitful wine entwined with a pink peppercorn spice element. An elegant style reflecting its cool climate origins, its medium bodied weight, a cool undercurrent of blue fruits, the succulent and richly layered palate is supported by some stalk tannin firmness.”

Gorgeous syrah, medium weight, brims with fragrance, spice, dark fruits, plushness balanced by juicy acid freshness. Cool climate syrah at its finest, made by Sarah Crowe with the same love & attention as the Yarra Yering wines. Quality bargain to be had here and absolutely delicious.

94 points, Philip Rich for  James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion  “All hand picked and berry sorted; 20% whole bunches and matured in barriques (10% new). A very bright crimson purple. A spicy little number redolent of dark cherries, violets, brown spice and sweet anise. Youthful and fresh on the nicely concentrated palate. Ripe, persistent tannins round out a wine to enjoy now (with food) or cellar for up to ten years.”
