Description
Vincent Paris is a native of Cornas and his first vintage was in 1997. He made his first couple of vintages with his uncle, legendary Cornas vigneron Robert Michel. He inherited most of his vineyards (some of which are 100+ years old) from his grandfather and purchased some from his uncle on his retirement in 2006.
Vincent Paris, co-president of the appellation of Cornas with Jacques Lemencier, owns 6 hectares of vineyards and produces about 2,500cs per year of which 1,600cs are Cornas.
The biodynamically farmed vineyards are located in various parcels along the southeast facing Cornas slope and a small plot in St. Joseph.
He prunes only four bunches of grapes per vine (normal is between five and seven) which concentrates the flavours in the grapes and avoids the need to drop fruit for green harvests. Fermentation at low temperatures and maturation in old oak barrels for up to 12 months.
Vincent’s wines exhibit power, yet possess a determined freshness and elegance to them. His Granit 30 and Granit 60 take their names from the slope and gradient of the vineyards and average vine age respectively. Vincent’s famed Geynale parcel is comprised exclusively of old vines planted in 1910. Vincent Paris is without a doubt one of the rising stars of the Rhône Valley.
This fine St Joseph hails from biodynamic estate grown plot of 25 year old Syrah vines. This shy, modest vigneron is so obsessed with the vineyard and has a remarkable ability to pick ripe fruit and maintain low alcohols with minimal influence of oak. Mouthwatering aromatics in this fine wine, purity of fruit, fine grained tannin structure and finesse. 13% alc.
Oui oui oui! Highly recommend this fine Syrah. Be quick- Last of this vintage – Stock is limited!
94 points, Best Value Northern Rhone 2018, Decanter “This has lifted spicy aromas comprising cedar, cigar wrapper and star anise all over blackberry fruit. It’s medium-bodied with vivid black fruit on the palate and well-balanced acidity alongside grippy, strict tannins that are ample but not an excessive tannic weave. A long finish and better balanced and more precise than most in 2018. From 25-year-old Syrah planted on decomposed granite near Ardoix, north of Tournon, at 300m altitude. All destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, then matured for 11 months, half in old barrels, half in stainless steel.”
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Beautiful perfume, violet floral notes, mulberry, green herb and pepper. Juicy in the palate but has a great feel of transparency and purity with lithe, fine tannins, cool acidity and a great extension of light berry flavour. Very elegant this wine.”
91 Points, Josh Reynolds, Vinous “Deep, brilliant magenta. Mineral-driven scents of blackberry, cherry, violet and cracked pepper. Shows very good clarity and spicy lift, offering vibrant dark fruit and mineral qualities as well as deeper notes of black olive and licorice. The lively, focused finish repeats the spice and floral notes and is framed by supple, even tannins.”
