Leading Barossa vintner, Kym Teusner has all bases covered from his impressive Rhone inspired reds .. he is all about his ingredients … top notch fruit from low yielding non-irrigated old Barossa vines with minimal winemaking intervention.
About this wine from winemaker Kym Teusner: “Our Bilmore Shiraz is sourced from vineyards along the western ridge of the Valley floor …an area stretching South of Seppeltsfield Road, around the back of the golf club at Rowland Flat and then on through the parish of Gomersal that overlooks the southern township of Lyndoch. Shiraz grown in these parts produces richly flavoured wines with soft, round mouth feel and plenty of delicious savoury characters. Seeking to place a pure expression of Shiraz flavour center stage here, we’ve gone easy on the oak using only older, seasoned barrels for the job of maturing for around 12 months.
We named this wine in honour of one of our favorite characters, the legendary ‘Roger Bilmore’! Whilst I’m sworn to secrecy and can’t reveal his true identity, I can tell you that by day, ‘John’ is a humble Barossa grape grower, a hard working type and a man of few words. The quality of his grapes usually does his bidding. But from time to time, under cover of night and with the aid of more than a few glasses of Barossa Shiraz, John shyly retreats and his alter ego Roger Bilmore steps up to the plate to show an entirely different face.
About the 2022 “A cooler contrast to the previous vintage, the 2022 vintage provided nice, steady ripening due largely to the absence of extreme heat. These prevailing conditions favoured wonderful flavour development at modest sugar levels, giving rise to great intensity, vitality and brightness in the resulting wines.
“In general, the wines from 2022 are deeply coloured and full flavoured yet they retain a fabric of finesse and vibrancy that sets the scene for a long life ahead. The 2022 Bilmore Shiraz is no exception, a rich and full flavoured wine with hints of ripe satuma plums, blackberries, dark chocolate, and a hint of licorice spice. It’s a quintessential Barossan Shiraz, packed with ripe fruits and a pleasing tannin length that reflects the essence of the Barossa Valley.” Kym Teusner
92 points, Dave Brookes for Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “Shiraz sourced from the red dirt over limestone of the Gomersal subregion; matured for 14 months in seasoned French oak. Fresh, lifted blackberry, black cherry and damson plums with hints of dark chocolate, licorice, crushed stone, gentle vanillin oak, tea cake, panforte, coal dust and dried meats. Full bodied, with a chocolatey tannin pull, fine acidity and an impressive draw of fruit. At this pricepoint, this is a no-brainer.”
90 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “This wine mines a reef of blackberry, baked plum, potpourri and peppercorn flavours, and does so to very good effect. It’s dark, flavoursome and tipped with just-enough chocolatey character to make it feel rounded and satisfying. If you’re in the mood for a Barossa Shiraz, this is a sound option.”
