Description
Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 yrs) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) have come up trumps again with this impressive vintage.
About this wine from the winemakers: “This time honoured blend is Sons of Eden’s offering to Zephyrus, Greek God of the West Wind, who is often depicted as a horse due to the speed attributed to this majestic animal. The vineyards of the Greater Barossa are regularly buffeted by cooling Westerly winds creating an ideal temperature range in which to slowly ripen.
“Sourced from fruit grown throughout the Barossa region, this wine is a blend of 10 unique vineyard sites. A combination of cooler climate Eden Valley Shiraz (44%) and warmer climate Barossa Valley Shiraz (56%) work in unison to create a complex, well-balanced wine.
“Using an array of fermentation techniques, all involving extended skin contact and gentle hand-plunging. Each of the fermentations retained varying levels of whole-bunch fruit clusters from 10 to 35%, then after 12-18 days on skins each ferment was pressed into a mix of new (35%) and conditioned French oak hogsheads. After a maturation of 16 months the wine was blended, naturally clarified and bottled without finings or filtration.
“Deep crimson in colour displaying vibrant wild berry and red-spice aromas. The attractive palate displays concentrated berry fruits with fine enduring tannins and finishes with vibrancy and freshness. A modern style Barossa Shiraz which will mature beautifully for many years to come. “
Fabulous wine .. unbeatable for quality and value. Don’t miss out on a case of this.

96 Points, Andrew Caillard MW & Ken Garrett, The Vintage Journal “Deep crimson. Intense raspberry, black strap liquorice aromas with mocha notes. Fresh ripe blackberry praline flavours, persistent aldente tannins and complexing mocha, marzipan, roasted walnut notes. Chocolaty/ grippy at the finish with seductive sweet fruit notes. Less is more here.”
95 Points, David Sly, Decanter “A blend of fruit sourced from multiple Barossa sub-regions provides a luscious meld, with the comforting embrace of rich red berries carrying an earthy swagger, complemented by lively mulberries and blackberries, piqued by a purple perfume of violets and lavender. The expansive, luxurious mid-palate is all about relaxing in the comfort zone, with supple textures framed by subtle oak, clipped black tea tannins and a pinch of black pepper. A very attractive blend.”
95 Points, Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion “Deep crimson in the glass with aromas of macerated doris plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits, cut with hints of baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar, panforte, pan juices and earth. Weighty, with impressive depth and ferrous-edged tannin grip, fading with a crème-de-cassis-like intensity to the fruit.”
95 pts, Ryan Montgomery, James Suckling “Brooding aromas of blackcurrants, mulberry bush, cassia bark and wild blackberries. The palate is full-bodied with fine tannins, bright acidity and a generous mouthfeel, showing fresh notes of blood plums, sarsaparilla, violets, graphite and pepper. Very giving and generous, with a beautiful aromatic lift.”
