“One of the stalwarts of the Clare Valley, established by Jane and Andrew Mitchell, producing long-lived rieslings and cabernet sauvignons in classic regional style. The range now includes very creditable semillon, grenache and shiraz. A lovely old stone apple shed is the cellar door and upper section of the upgraded winery. Children Angus and Edwina are now working in the business, heralding generational changes. Over the years the Mitchells have established or acquired 70ha of vineyards on 4 excellent sites, some vines over 60 years old; all are managed organically, with biodynamic composts used for over a decade.“ James Halliday.

From the winemaker about this wine: “This is a stylish and sophisticated Shiraz that embodies the concept of terroir – the vineyard’s unique characteristics continue to influence the flavour and structure of this delightful lighter style red.
“A Classic Peppertree Shiraz. Forrest fruits on the nose, slightly funky – in the best way possible! Clean acid, surrounded by primary fruit flavour, Plum and blue berries that lead into dry, leathery tannins through to the finish. Drawing inspiration from traditional Syrah style wines, this elegant Shiraz is slightly lower in alcohol, sitting at 14%.
“A late start to the growing season, due to cool and wet weather, the wettest year since 2000, with 1000mm of rain. This led to a later start for vintage. The vines were in great condition with strong canopies, fruit was of a high quality across the board
“Our Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz has a component of whole bunch, goes through a wild open fermentation which gives a wonderful lifted perfume to the wine and helps with the tannin structure. The Shiraz is estate bottled after 18 months in French oak barrels.”
