Description

“One of the stalwarts of the Clare Valley, established by Jane and Andrew Mitchell, producing long-lived rieslings and cabernet sauvignons in classic regional style. The range now includes very creditable semillon, grenache and shiraz. A lovely old stone apple shed is the cellar door and upper section of the upgraded winery. Children Angus and Edwina are now working in the business, heralding generational changes. Over the years the Mitchells have established or acquired 70ha of vineyards on 4 excellent sites, some vines over 60 years old; all are managed organically, with biodynamic composts used for over a decade. James Halliday.

Mitchell wines has been guided by three generations of passionate winemakers. From Peter McNicol Mitchell’s modest beginnings, to Andrew and Jane’s business nous and passion for winemaking that they now share with the next generation of Mitchell Wines, their three children, Hilary, Angus and Edwina. While the family continues to reflect and learn from the experience and knowledge of Peter McNicol Mitchell, they place great importance on innovating into the future of winemaking and continually improving their wines and methods. Implementing sustainable practices at every opportunity, dry-grown vineyards have ensured responsible water conservation, while eliminating the use of artificial herbicides and pesticides has encouraged biodiversity to promotes intense flavours and characteristics in the grapes. The rich soils and vineyards full of life harvest rich flavours and a vibrant energy that is present throughout the entire Mitchell Wines portfolio.

From the winemaker about this wine: “This is a stylish and sophisticated Shiraz that embodies the concept of terroir – the vineyard’s unique characteristics continue to influence the flavour and structure of this delightful lighter style red.

A Classic Peppertree Shiraz. Forrest fruits on the nose, slightly funky – in the best way possible! Clean acid, surrounded by primary fruit flavour, Plum and blue berries that lead into dry, leathery tannins through to the finish. Drawing inspiration from traditional Syrah style wines, this elegant Shiraz is slightly lower in alcohol, sitting at 14%.
“A late start to the growing season, due to cool and wet weather, the wettest year since 2000, with 1000mm of rain. This led to a later start for vintage. The vines were in great condition with strong canopies, fruit was of a high quality across the board
“Our Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz has a component of whole bunch, goes through a wild open fermentation which gives a wonderful lifted perfume to the wine and helps with the tannin structure. The Shiraz is estate bottled after 18 months in French oak barrels.”

93 points, Andrew Caillard MW. “Medium deep crimson. Lifted cranberry, redcurrant, blueberry, sage aromas with dark chocolate, vanilla notes. Gentle cranberry, redcurrant, blackberry chinotto flavours, fine loose knit slinky bittersweet textures and underlying vanilla with a hint of ginger oak. Finishes chalky firm with plentiful fruit sweet notes. Very attractive, medium bodied style with controlled tannins and lovely mid palate richness. Drink now – 2028 14% alc.”
92 points, Ken Garrett, Wine Pilot “.. The colour of the wine is a deep red with flickers of purple throughout. It is immediately evident that there is some complexity here. Aromas of red fruits, chocolate, spices, cloves and florals. The palate is tight, yet supple, and offers good balance throughout its very long length, finishing with slightly gritty tannins. Certainly up for drinking now but it will sail through another decade in the cellar, if you can resist.”
91 points, Erin Larkin for James Halliday Wine Companion Bright acidity punctuates the array of red and purple berries in the mouth, providing structure and a life of its own. The oak is nicely integrated, as expected after all this time. The wine tails out elegantly over the finish, showing class and restraint at all times.”
