Description
The Kaesler vineyards were owned and run by the Kaesler family from 1893 to 1986. In 1999, winemaker Reid Bosward seized the opportunity to become the head of the new Kaesler family when he and his partners bought Kaesler, becoming the third owners of this property. At this time, the Kaesler vineyards consisted of over 70% red wine vines, all 40 years of age or more. Now having access to premium old vine material, Reid set out to produce bold estate wines representative of the Barossa Valley. The intensity of the old vine Shiraz inspired Reid to produce a special premium batch, the “Old Bastard.” Classified as “Outstanding” by Langtons with its rich and intense fruit style, the Old Bastard Shiraz paved the way for Kaesler. A string of highly celebrated wines followed suit, the generous Stonehorse range and premium Old Vine Shiraz, “The Bogan” and Alte Reben wines to name a few.
Kaesler owns just over 37 hectares (92 acres) of vineyards in the Barossa Valley, the majority of it is old vine material planted in 1893, 1899, 1930 and in the 1960’s. Fruit is hand picked and hand pruned with irrigation kept to a minimum. Crop thinning is done in most years to reduce yields and maximise flavour with blocks kept separate until final blending. Nigel Van Der Zande, the Vineyard Manager for Kaesler (and it’s sister vineyards), has introduced revegetation projects to improve soils, help restore the natural balance and give something back to the environment.
The Bogan is an assemblage of vines planted in Marananga and Nuriootpa. The oldest vines are 119 years old.
About the 2022 from the winemaker: “Much like a favourite flannelette shirt, the Kaesler Bogan is full of warmth and person ality. Creator Reid Bosward was determined to prove that being described as a ‘country bogan’ was no barrier to producing a fine Barossa Shiraz. Proof that a stylish red transcends class. The Bogan is a quintessential, full-bodied Shiraz produced from an assemblage of estate vines with an averageage of 65 years.
“The Bogan remains true to its roots – bold, unapologetic, and unmistakably Barossa. Year after year, it continues to evolve, pushing the limits of what a classic Shiraz can be. The 2022 vintage is nothing short of exceptional. With ideal growing conditions, this release captures the very best of our old vine plantings. One of the finest Bogan in its 20-year legacy, it delivers rich, vibrant purity and depth of fruit in every sip. Crafted to impress now, and destined to reward cellaring for the next 15 to 20 years.
“Made from one of the greatest vintages of all time, comes arguably the best Bogan ever released in its 20-year history. A classic rich, pure Shiraz that will age gracefully over the next 20 years. The grapes are handpicked and sorted, destemmed and fermented in tank for 8 – 9 days, with pump overs as required. After fermentation the wine was pressed and left to settle for a few days before being racked into seasoned French oak and matured for 15 months.
“Bright deep crimson with purple hue. Dark plum and blueberry, hints of charcuterie and char from the oak. Classic Bogan in style, dense and rich, full of dark layered fruits. However, it finishes soft with pure & fine tannin.”

94 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Australian Wine Companion The beautifully named Bogan is an assemblage of shiraz from plots planted between 1899 and 1965. Full bodied and pure of fruit, it has evolved over the years I’ve seen it and is seemingly a little lighter on its feet now. Red and dark fruits, crunchy, plummy fruits wth abundant spice, purple floral facets and an earthy core, finishing bright and long wth fine, sandy tannins and an enduring draw on the exit.”
