Description

Winemaker Alex Head’s dream to make elegant Barossa wines began in 1999 while travelling through some of Europe’s greatest wine growing regions, along with his longheld fascination with the synergy of good wine, fine food and happy company at the table. Head Wines is all that and more.

Alex follows a traditional négociant model, an old practice where the winemaker does not grow their own grapes, instead working with a number of small growers. Around three-quarters of the grapes that end up in Head Wines’ bottles are sourced from a carefully chosen selection of these elevated Eden Valley sites. All of these vineyards are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible; yields are controlled and grapes are hand-picked and no use of sulphites in the winemaking process.

Not being tied to his own vineyards has allowed Alex to spend years understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a number of sites in pursuit of his individual style. Alex creates great Barossan wines that are memorably balanced whilst pursuing styles that are intentional and truly of place. This is sublime winemaking.

“Some say I have a contrary approach. But my motivation is simple. Old World wines captivate me and no place lets me express that better than the Barossa.” Alex Head

Top 50 Australian Wineries for 2023 by The Real Review.

About this wine from the winemaker:  85% Shiraz, 9% Grenache, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Mataro  When I travel the world of wine, I usually miss our own Australian styles. They’ve been a part of my Heart for near 30 years and always brings me back Home. Here there is a constant search for refinement, quality and value for our customers and answers have come through the art of blending classical, ‘hero’ varieties of the Barossa. There is a point at which the components fill the corners of the palate and seem to stop fighting each other – the calmness comes to the palate. For the mild 2023 wine we see a typical abundance of spicy Shiraz fruit, softened by the aromatic and juicy Grenache, firmed up with Cabernet and Mataro. This is the best value and most traditional Barossa wine within our offering…. wrap your laughing chops around this absolute stunner!”

We love this new release just arrived!     Reviews for 2022 .. 93 points Ken Gargett, The Wine Pilot “The old Barossa reds were not the blockbuster monsters which are so popular today but rather, sought out a path of drinkability, while never sacrificing flavour. This is a welcome return to the past. There is 15% Cabernet Sauvignon included in the blend, which underwent a two week ferment with wild yeasts. Maturation was in a range of formats with 10% being new French oak. The fruit came from a range of Barossa sub-regions – Bethany, Greenock, Nuriootpa and Krondorf. 1,000 cases. Mauve/magenta in colour, the nose offers notes of blackberries, herbs, plums, mulberries, chocolate, coffee beans and mocha. A lingering finish with sleek tannins ties things together. Good focus here, and fine balance. This is indeed a more elegant style, but it lacks absolutely nothing in flavour. Apparently, Alex must have recently won Gold Lotto. Otherwise, why on earth would he be giving this away at such an amazingly cheap price.

91 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion “A classic dry-red style that lands firmly in the great value bistro wine spectrum. A shiraz with just a splash of cabernet sauvignon, and one that shows a deep colour and an equally deep fruit set. Black cherry, blackberry and dark plum tones are supported by hints of brown spice, licorice, dark chocolate, violets and earth. Savoury and darkly fruited on the palate, with a meaty edge, silty tannins and a medium-length finish. It makes for great drinking at a sharp price.

91 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “… Tasty. A bit of a banger at its price point. Recommended.”
