‘If you’re into the new wave of true fine wine producers of Australia you should be onto, should get onto, Domenica. Classics in the making. Rising high. Peter Graham got schooled (partly) at the great Giaconda winery in Beechworth. This is where he struts his own stuff. Single vineyard wine sent to large format oak to rest a while. It’s impressive.’ Mike Bennie Wine Front
After 13 years making wine at his uncles domain, Giaconda, Peter Graham decided to set up his own winery. Domenica sits 460m above sea level atop the granite ridge sweeping away to the south west of Beechworth. The wines are vividly reflective of their origin, a gripping mineral texture encasing the mature vine vitality of the varietals chosen to express it. Winemaking is traditional. Taste is more important than numbers. The yeasts come from the site, not a packet. Pressings, solids and lees all play their part completing the picture. The wines are carefully maintained in oak barriques before being bottled unfiltered. Peter recently took over the lease of the esteemed Warners vineyard (Warners vineyard was used in Giaconda’s shiraz for close to 20 years!) located 500 meters from Domenica estate vineyard.
Beechworth is an impressive wine growing region, in the alpine North East of Victoria .. granitic soils produce high quality cool climate wine. Beechworth has one of Australia’s most continental climates – large diurnal temperature differences, warm days and cold nights and mornings – perfect conditions for northern Rhone varieties such as shiraz.
About this wine: This fine release 100% Warner’s vineyard, granitic soils, north facing which makes this a touch more approachable, fleshier than Domenica Estate shiraz (south facing) with lovely primary fruit on mid palate. Concrete fermenters, followed by12 mths maturation in old french oak barriques and hogsheads. Gorgeous scents of black and red fruits, cola, liquorice, white pepper and dusty earth. On the palate there is a depth of flavour and complexity with spicy savouriness, plum and cherry fruit flavours together with a purple inky minerality. Medium bodied with fine tannins perfectly integrated with mouthwatering cool climate acidity. So damn delicious.. detailed flavour and aroma reminds me of smart St Joseph from Northern Rhone. Pedigree and remarkable value on offer here from Beechworth – do not hesitate here!
