2020 HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION AWARDS BEST VALUE WINERY OF THE YEAR
“The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day.
The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
“Margaret River Syrah is noteworthy because of its fragrance and attractiveness in its youth. A rachis (Latin botanical term) is the stalk to which the individual berries are attached to. This cuvee is so named because of the inclusion of 1/3 whole bunches (rachis) in the cuvee. The rachis contributes perfumes, tannin and flavours additional to the grapes.
The new 2023 is here and is sensational. Already receiving high praise!
97 points, GOLD Medal 2025, International Wine & Spirits Competition “Seductive aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and a pinch of crunchy black pepper. The exquisitely textured palate delights with fresh blueberry and juicy pastille flavours, leading to a rich, smoky finish that resonates beautifully.”
92 points, Ray Jordan “Vibrant fruit on the nose sprinkled with spices and carrying a lovely savoury element. The medium-bodied palate has plenty with its supple structure and fine oak and tannin combination supporting a healthy layer of generous fruit. Elegant and stylish.”
92 points Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate “..spicy and aromatic, with dark chocolate and blackberries, leather, licorice and blood orange. In the mouth, the fruit is bright, and tannins are fine, moving toward silty. This is an impressive iteration of Margaret River Syrah from a producer that has long championed its virtues in the region.”
