Description
Experienced winemaker David Hook has worked everywhere from Tyrrells to Lakes Folly and in France, Spain.
The Old Vines is only produced in exceptional years and 2011 was just that for Hunter shiraz. Handpicked from original 30 year old, low-yielding vineyard, fermented in open fermenters, followed by maturation for 12 months in French oak. Lovely fragrance of red and black spiced berries. Beautiful generous fruit on the palate, layers of complexity and structure with elegance and attractive vibrancy. Layers and layers of flavour revealed themselves as we retasted over a couple of days so it is also built to age.
94 points James Halliday “…This medium-bodied wine has excellent texture and structure, red and black fruits folded in an embrace of quality oak and balanced, but persistent, tannins.”
93 points Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Peppery, spicy aromas – red fruits too. Good briary lift to start. Concentrated in the palate, slippery texture, great length, nice fruit sweetness too. And a stemmsy kick of glossy acidity in the mix. Very likeable and made in an en vogue way, appealing to those seeking medium weight, savoury wine styles. Yes!”
