Description
Cobaw Ridge was established in 1985 by Alan and Nelly Cooper. Vines were planted on granitic, sandy soil in the cool climate Macedon Ranges, on the cusp of the Great Dividing Range at some 610m. Their positioning, in a natural amphitheatre, provides the perfect place to produce terroir-driven wines. 100% estate grown, they are now fully certified organic and biodynamic, something they are very proud of, and deservedly so. Certainly are up there as one of Victoria’s great wineries.
This wine is 100 % estate grown, made and bottled. Certified organic / biodynamic. 10% whole-bunch added to base of fermenter with balance soft destemmed on top. So2 added to fresh must. After about 4 days the must commenced natural fermentation. Hand plunged and a few gently pump overs to aid extraction. 15 days on skins then basket pressed to tank. Racked to barrel, 30 % new small French oak. Two years in French oak, full secondary fermentation in oak. Bottle 15/7/20, small so2 addition prior to bottling. Zero other addition, zero fining or filtration. Given 10 months bottle maturation prior to release.
Quite plush and exuberant, fine graphite and dried herbs with a touch of crushed pepper. A long future awaits!
95 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Beautiful wines in general from Cobaw Ridge, syrah often idiosyncratic, though in uniqueness pegs its own quality. Biodynamic farmed and raised. Syrupy and slick, strong cranberry juice vibes, sour cherry, mint leaf, fennel, white pepper. Has this wonderful, transparent, gossamer sheet feel, crisp tannins that build to alight, granitic pucker. Lots of crushed rock here. It gets better and better and better with air. A strong pinosity here, very much a lighter, lithe style, though a distinct alpine nebbiolo thing too! How good!”
