“Yarra Valley pioneers, the de Pury family are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce. Produced from some of the oldest vines in the valley, these are long-lived wines made in tiny quantities. Yeringberg makes wines from the low-yielding vines re-established on the heart of what was one of the most famous vineyards of the nineteenth century. In the riper years, the red wines have a velvety generosity of flavour which is rarely encountered, yet never lose varietal character, while the Yeringberg White takes students of history back to Yeringberg’s fame in the nineteenth century.” – James Halliday
Guill de Pury grew up beside the out-of-operation 19th-century winery in Coldstream where a lack of interest in fine table wines had caused production to cease in 1921. In 1969, Guill and wife Katherine decided to replant the vineyard and start again, and gradually restored the reputation of this great Australian estate. Guill has since handed over chief responsibility for the wines to daughter Sandra de Pury.
“A 19th century Yarra Valley pioneer, Yeringberg’s renaissance began when the 3rd generation wine grower, Guill and Katherine de Pury began replanting vines in 1969, making their first commercial wine in ’74. Since ’08, the wines have been made by daughter Sandra while her brother, David, who has a PhD in plant physiology, manages the vineyards and Yeringberg’s grass-fed lamb and cattle. Committed to the future, a new winery is in design phase and a new vine program began in ’20 to mitigate against climate change and phylloxera, establishing 2 new vineyard sites on south- and east-facing slopes. The future could not be more exciting for one of the Yarra’s oldest and most important producers. “ Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
About this wine from the winemaker: “Our third Rosé is a brilliant pale salmon colour. The intense aromas are reminiscent of crushed strawberries and orange blossom. It has a savoury yet smooth palate with some texture at the finish, and a long lingering aftertaste. The wine was conceived more as a pink red wine than a rose-tinged white; it relies on phenolics for structure rather than being an acid-driven, just-done rosé. It’s dry and fresh and leans towards texture and savouriness. It’s a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Shiraz grapes (30%) from 25 year-old vines along our front drive. The Shiraz was whole bunch pressed, while the Cabernet was crushed before pressing. After finishing fermentation, the wine was aged in barrel for 6 months.” – Sandra de Pury
2025 Halliday Wine Companion Top Rated Roses & 95 points, Philip Rich “A blend of 75/25% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz; both from ’99 plantings. Matured for seven months in seasoned barrels. A bright orange-pink, this energetic wine has aromas of red fruits, blood oranges, musk and subtle florals. Dry and gently fleshy, finishing with a refreshing citrus zest bitterness. Another excellent Yeringberg rosé.”
