Description
Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Over the past decade, the vineyard has built a reputation for chardonnay and pinot noir of great purity and character under its Single Vineyard and Single Block Release labels.
Led by winemaker Tom Carson, the Yabby Lake philosophy is to craft wines that speak of our site and the season in which they were grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.
The producer’s vision and dedication has led to some exciting accolades in recent years, including their history-making Block 1 Pinot Noir – which was the first pinot noir ever to win the revered Jimmy Watson Trophy, after 52 years of the award.
About this wine from the Winemaker: “The 2023 season brought ‘La Nina’ weather conditions for the third year in a row – a cool and late ripening vintage with low yields and superb quality. The 2023 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is an expression of purity and balance. Select parcels were chosen for their concentration and layers of sily tannins.
“A bright crimson. Aromas of red fruits – strawberry, raspberry, red currant, coupled with a floral and spicy note. The palate has layers of fine grained and silky tannins. It is intense and full, with layers of flavour and texture leading to a long, linger ing finish. Cellar for at least five years, and preferably more than 10.”
96 points, James Suckling “Wonderfully expressive and lifted with aromas of damson plums, potpourri and blood oranges. The medium-bodied palate has finely integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving multifaceted notes of wild raspberries, blueberry bush, dried herbs and spices. Very complex and complete. “
95 Points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion “Such lovely composure and a complete wine with all the heady aromas and flavours the variety can muster – roses, dark cherries and pips, wood spices, chinotto and blood orange. The fuller-bodied palate is all about texture, with silky tannins and lithe acidity encompassing a core of ripe, juicy fruit.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “I thought this was a bit simple at first but it grew and grew and ended up being anything but. It tastes of peanut shells and black cherries, cloves and assorted sweet spices, with smoky reduction and twiggy herb-chinotto notes also contributing. It’s one of those wines that tightens as it breathes too. In the end this wine’s quality is abundantly clear.”
94 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review “Medium red with a tinge of purple and a complex foresty bouquet of sour cherry, undergrowth and leaf-litter. Hint of fivespice. Intense and bright, lively palate with fleshy richnes and very fine, supple tannins in perfect balance with the flavour. Delicious pinot noir. “
