Toolangi Vineyard is owned by Gary & Julie Hounsell who have a clear and simple strategy; grow the highest quality Yarra Valley grapes and put them in the hands of the best winemaker for each varietal – Yering Station, Oakridge and Hoddles Creek make their wine. This has served Toolangi well and today it stands as one of the star wineries of the Yarra Valley – awarded the coveted Halliday 5 red star rating (top 3% of Australia’s premium wineries).
Toolangi’s ‘Yarra Valley’ Pinot Noir has been on something of a roll in recent vintages, picking up an average of 94 Halliday points across the past three years. That’s pretty smart form for an entry-level wine.
Crafted from hand-picked estate fruit, this year the winemaking was back in the hands of Yering Station’s decorated winemaker, Willy Lunn. The fruit was entirely de-stemmed, cold soaked for three days before fermentation in Yering Station’s large open fermenters. The wine was raised in French oak barriques (10% new oak), for ten months before bottling.
It’s a wine that assertively expresses the qualities of a fine vintage. It’s very expressive and polished, with supple, sweet strawberry fruit, juicy acidity and medium weight tannins all pulling in the same direction. A hint of sweet spice on the finish only adds to the allure.
94 points, James Halliday’s 2019 Australian Wine Companion “MV6, hand-picked, destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented, matured for 10 months in French barriques (10% new). Light, clear red-purple; bright, fresh red fruits on the fragrant bouquet and palate alike; light to medium-bodied; has good length and mouthfeel. Excellent value.”
