“Potel is now an old hand in the Côte and it shows as the quality is excellent. Stylistically, if you’ve enjoyed the Potel wines in the past, there is no reason that you would not enjoy either variation of the Bellene wines as they are classic in the best sense of the term.” Allan Meadows aka BURGHOUND
“Nicolas Potel no longer makes the wines that bear his name, he makes them at Domaine de Bellene and they’re superb.” Jonathan Ray, The Daily Telegraph, UK
This isn’t just a “leftover grapes, let’s see what happens” approach from the daring and renowned winemaker Nicolas Potel. After launching Domaine de Bellene in 2008, Potel quickly expanded with Maison Roche de Bellene, collaborating closely with the same growers and estates he had built strong relationships with over 15 years of living and working in Beaune. Like his Domaine wines, he focuses on individual terroirs, primarily from old vines (40+ years old), and works exclusively with vineyards that are either BIO certified or farmed according to “lutte raisonnée” (sustainable viticulture) principles. This commitment to quality and sustainability allows Nicolas to consistently create expressive, terroir-driven wines that embody his vision, all while keeping them accessible at affordable prices.
The Bellene name origin comes from Bellenos, an ancient Gallic god of sun and beauty. The city of Beaune was first known as “Bellena” during the Roman times, followed by “Bellene” during the Middle Ages and eventually translated into Beaune.
This entry-level red Burgundy is crafted from vineyards in both the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, with vines ranging from 30 to 80 years old, all farmed sustainably. The majority of the wine is aged in barriques, with a small portion finished in stainless steel to preserve its pure style, showcasing vibrant fruit and a refined texture.
The 2022 vintage is looking exceptional! It offers a captivating blend of red and black cherries, accented with hints of sweet spice and a touch of black pepper, while subtle savory notes peek through the lush fruit profile. The wine delivers a lively fruit-driven character that gradually fades, revealing deeper layers of spice and fresh, crushed herbs. It beautifully balances freshness, juicy fruit, and fine structural elements, making for a complex and well-rounded experience.
