Description

Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!

The 20-year-old Silverwood vineyard in Balnarring provides the fruit and Barnaby Flanders takes care of the rest. This north-facing parcel, on grey sandy loams begets a slightly denser Pinot than Garagiste’s Merricks Pinot; more in the way of darker fruit, peppered with brown spices, and chewier tannins.

On the nose the Balnarring is showing even more seductive black fruits and spice, leading to a plush palate dripping with black raspberry and sweet berry fruit, tempered by a touch of savoury tannins and a charmingly bright, sinewy finish.
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au  “We’ve travelled down the hill a bit when we head to Balnarring. We’re not talking Tuerong territory, which is flatter and warmer, but we’ve come down from the undulating ‘heights’ of Main Ridge, Red Hill and Merricks. I like the way this combines velvet with grunt. There’s a satiny aspect to both the fruit and the oak but there’s so much tannin and savoury-spice that it has a broody kind of grumble to it. It’s a muscle-car version of pinot noir. The fruit is dark, there are deli meat and clove-like notes, there are sparks of spice. It’s about bones with plenty of meat on them.”
