Description
Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.
About this wine from the winemaker: “Densely fruited, with a distinctive interplay of plush mouthfeel and Freycinet’s hallmark tannin structure, this an unmissable release of a Tasmanian wine icon. Capturing the essence of our unique amphitheatre site, the low yields of this vintage have delivered superb concentration and layers of glorious fragrance which unfurl with time in the glass.
“The 2024 season on the east coast of Tasmania saw the return of warmer, drier conditions after three cooler, wetter, La Nina influenced seasons. The winter preceding the growing season set the scene with mild above average temperatures throughout and close to normal rainfall. Spring and summer continued this warmer than average temperature pattern and low rain fall. Budburst was early as a result and settled flowering conditions provided a return to long-term average yields with perfect, well-formed bunches. Given the extra warmth throughout the season all varieties ripened beautifully and up to three weeks earlier than normal. Fruit quality was exceptional with concentrated flavours and ripe, juicy acidity.
“Fully ripened fruit is handpicked for this wine from our original 1979 plantings of predominately own rooted G5V15 clone. 100% whole berry fermentation provides impressive fruit weight and elegant, supple tannins. Matured in French oak barriques (25% new) for 10 months on fine lees.
“The hallmarks of power, concentration, complexity and length feature in this wine. Alluring aromas of spice and macerated cherries, ripe raspberries and plums combine with a subtle floral perfume of rosehip, truffle and undergrowth. The vibrant palate is silken and detailed, offering an abundance of exotic spice, pomegranate and sour cherry flavours intermingled with subtle oak nuances, svelte mineral tannins and a satiny mouthfeel. Silky texture and gamey, intriguing forest floor characteristics will further develop with careful cellaring over 10 to 15 years. A magnificent wine reflecting the unique terroir of a very special site.”
Stunning new vintage of this flagship pinot! Reviews for 2022…. 95 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review “Medium red with a tinge of purple and attractive smoked cherry, charcuterie and pot-pourri aromas; the palate intense and bright, lively and piercing with good concentration and multi-layered flavours, the tannins surrounding a lovely juicy core of sweet ripe fruit. Gorgeous drinking. Long finish too. Superb.”
95 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion “Such a pretty red-fruited wine with notes of redcurrant, raspberry, red cherry and a liminal whiff of watermelon and cranberry. There’s an array of exotic spice and hints of purple flowers, rhubarb, amaro herbs, mushroom broth, forest floor, Peking duck, pomegranate and earth. Spacious, filigreed and mineral-laden, I really liked this wine’s energy, super-fine tannins, meaty nuance and tail of raspberry and spice as it slowly retreated. Lovely and perfect for those seeking a lighter, airier style of pinot.”
