Description
This small vineyard is located just north of Hobart on a perfectly positioned north-east facing slope. The beautiful old Georgian homestead of Clarence House was built in 1830 at Clarence Plains, Mt Rumney, has been maintained in its original splendour surrounded by beautiful gardens, and in 1998 present owner David Kilpatrick began planting vines on the north east sloping block facing Mount Rumney just below the Coal River Valley. Over 8ha of the total 12ha of plantings consists of pinot noir and chardonnay, with the remainder including pinot blanc, sauvignon blanc, merlot and tempranillo. All wines are now made by Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb at the nearby Pooley cellar in Cambridge.
Anna and Justin, of Pooley Wines, would arguably be the powerhouse winemaking couple of Australia. Having spent years making wine on different continents in their youth, they settled at their family estate in Tasmania where they have won countless awards and medals. Anna’s experience as a wine show judge proves invaluable during key blending decisions and both Anna and Justin work very closely with Clarence House proprietor David Kilpatrick. Situated just ten minutes from one another, the relationship was borne of a fruit supply and winemaking synergy, exemplified by David’s desire and Justin and Anna’s experience crafting cult, premium, cool climate wines.
The majority of the fruit for this wine was destemmed for wild fermentation with a small portion of whole bunches for perfume and structure. Aged in a combination of new and old French oak barriques and puncheons, with a selection to determine the most structural and pristine barrels for the reserve bottling.
2022 has the goods…A pinot typified by perfume, spice, nuanced tannin and freshness. Medium bodied, with concentration of fruit tempered by fine structure. Elegant and ethereal. Enjoy with game meats and decanting is recommended. Retasted this beauty mid April 2023 exceptional Tassie Pinot here, winning quality and value.
Review of 2021:
93 points, Tyson Stelzer, 2022 Halliday Wine Companion”From a selection from the oldest blocks, planted 1998; 115, 2051 and MV6 clones; 20% whole bunches; matured 12 months in 10% new French oak puncheons. There is a lively, energetic jubilance to this cool season, which sits neatly in the spicy black fruit depth of well-established vines. Whole bunches come to the party with their signature, spicy, floral overtones. Chiselled and linear, it’s confidently built for the cellar.”
