“The Pierre Péters Champagnes stand out for their crystalline precision, energy and nuance, which makes them reference-points for what Chardonnay is all about in the Côtes des Blancs and Mesnil in particular for the Chétillons. When I want to drink brilliant, pure Blanc des Blancs, I often reach for the wines of this small, family-owned estate.” ANTONIO GALLONI
About this wine from the winery: “The blend of our vintage 100 % Grand Cru Chardonnay Champagne L’Esprit originates from four single vineyards located in Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant, Oger and is elaborated only during the finest harvest years.
The wine is a luminous pale gold color with hints of green typical of the Chardonnay varietal. The mousse is fine and regular with a pretty ribbon of strong bubbles.
Aroma – The first approach is subtle which, once aerated, opens to floral notes (lime-tree) and dried fruits. Notes of citrus and almond follow with finishing touches of minerality bringing both complexity and elegance.
Palate -Other than vintages marked by hot and dry growing seasons, L’Esprit typically has a well-balanced attack which is both frank and stylishly elegant. Delicate notes of lemon and stone fruit and flowers are followed by notes of tangerine and toasted bread. The finish is persistent with candied citrus flavors and a chalky minerality that adds a twist of salinity. This Champagne represents the perfect balance between strength and finesse. Dosage: 4.5 to 5.5 g / L, depending on the vintage and maturity.”
95pts ANTONIO GALLONI, Vinous “The L’Esprit de 2019 is one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting. Exuberant and racy, with tons of energy, the 2019 reflects the natural intensity of this great vintage while retaining the super-classic signatures of the Côtes des Blancs. This cuvée is a blend of fruit sourced from Grand Cru sites in Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant and Oger. Readers who want to enjoy a top-flight Champagne without splurging will find so much to like here. Hints of tangerine peel, marzipan and dried flowers linger on the intensely saline finish. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 19, 2023.”
95pts TOM HEWSON, Decanter Magazine “The year’s heat has yielded concentration and fragrance rather than weight, with lemon oil and Mirabelle plum framed in a compact, driven, yet polished palate whose firm core of acid will unwind beautifully over the coming decade as the aromatics develop further. Between the excellence of Pierre Péters non-vintage and the renown of its top offerings, the vintage-level cuvée can sometimes be overlooked, but in 2019 – one of winemaker Rodolphe Péters’ favourite years – it’s an absolute star. ”
