Description

Bodega Chacra is internationally recognized as the pinnacle of South American Pinot Noir. Plantings from 1932, 1955 and 2002 are bio-dynamically farmed in the Rio Negro Valley of Northern Patagonia half way between the Andes and the Atlantic Ocean. The valley itself is a glacial bed 15 miles wide and 300 miles long along the rive bank at an elevation of 300 metres.

Established by Piero Incisa della Rochetta (the grandson of the family from Tenuta San Guido of Bolgheri fame in Italia that makes Sassicaia) who discovered these abandoned vineyards in 2004 these wines offer a new expression of Pinot Noir. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours.

From vines planted in 1955 on a sea of pebbles. There is a wonderful purity in this wine with dried strawberry and iodine. Cherry fruit with undertones of smoke, game and mineral. Fermented whole cluster at very low temperatures, enhancing the floras. 50% in concrete egg and 50% in 2nd, 3rd and 4th use oak for 10 months.

97 points James Suckling “Extremely aromatic, with very floral aromas of lavender, violets, peaches and citrus blossoms. It’s medium-bodied with firm and crunchy tannins. Structured and solid as a rock”
