Description
The 2014 Ampel Pinot Noir marks the second vintage sourced exclusively from Gerald and Helen Phillips small plot of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris at York Town, in the north west of the Tamar Valley GI. We think this vineyard is very special. Apart from being lovingly tended by Gerald and Helen as if it was their front lawn, it is a gently sloping, well-protected north-facing site ensuring optimal ripeness every year. The soil is free-draining quartz gravel with very little organic matter so disease pressure is very low ensuring minimal chemical input and forcing the vines to struggle and dig their roots deep. 2014 saw exceptionally low yields of less than half the regular crop. Following fermentation with natural yeasts it was gently pressed and run to used French oak barriques for 9 months aging on fine lees, after which it was patiently tank settled before being bottled unfined with a very course filtration.
Fine Tamar Valley Pinot Noir with fragrant nose of red and pink flowers along with ripe raspberry, red cherry, plum, earth, dried herbs and light spice.
At only 13% alc/vol, the palate offers lovely depth and weight with ripe and rich fruit flavours that remain savoury and in perfect balance with the supporting 100% natural acidity and the fine grained tannins. This is a sophisticated Pinot Noir that will delight everyone at the table. This is definitely the most serious Ampel Pinot Noir to date
