Description
Pierluigi Talenti purchased the pian del Conte estate in the 1950s . As one of the most influential wine makers in Montalcino he was always a staunch traditionalist. During his time at the legendary Il Poggione estate he resisted the trend of rich, powerful wines and looked for elegance and finesse and continued this style at his own estate. Today his son Riccardo is in charge at the 40 hectare property of which approximately 20 hectares are under vine and looks after the estate with utmost respect for tradition while making subtle changes to express even further the subtleties of the 11 different plots. The vineyards are located at altitudes between 300 to 420 meters above sea level and the soil is sandy loam and galestro. 100% Sangiovese. The wines age in a mix of 500 litres and 25 hectoliter Slavonian Oak barrels.
About this wine from the winery: Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced from different vineyards located on the southeast and southwest sides of Montalcino, at altitudes ranging from 250 to 400 m MSL. The southeast-facing soils are composed of sandy loam, with limestone plates and plenty of heavy stones. The wine ages for several months in French and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a period of bottle aging.
Bright ruby red with youthful violet reflections. The nose is fresh and expressive, showing aromas of ripe cherry, plum and sour cherry, with light floral notes, hints of mint and herbs, and a touch of sweet spice from gentle oak ageing. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, juicy and well balanced, with vibrant red fruit, fresh acidity and smooth, finely integrated tannins typical of Sangiovese from Montalcino. The texture is polished but not simple, with a subtle savoury and mineral edge that adds depth. The finish is clean, persistent and lightly spicy, making it very approachable young while still having enough structure to develop over the next few years
93 Points, James Suckling “A graceful and super-intense wine with peach peel, stone fruit, sweet violets and touches of thyme, pomegranates and red cherries. Its layered complexity is sustained on the palate by velvety, silky tannins, refreshing acidity and a savory finish. Medium-bodied with tantalizing suppleness.”
