Description
‘Pete and his partner Magali Gely operate what I think is the best new-wave of small-scale Barossa wine companies to emerge at the beginning of the 21st century… These weren’t big, blockbuster, showy wines designed to impress. They were wines that managed to take the best of the Barossa’s sometimes forgotten varietal traditions and fuse them onto a very European flavour sensibility.’ Max Allen, The future makers
‘It seems that Spinifex wines can do no wrong.’ Campbell Mattinson
‘Le Chemin’ meaning ‘The Path’ or ‘The Way’ – is a co-fermented blend of Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz, Carignan and Cinsault fruit exclusively sourced from very old vineyards. The fruit quality in 2009 vintage was so good it provided an opportunity for a rare bottling: to co-ferment these varieties together in a single tank as the mild and long season presented a window where all five varieties were at an optimal and appropriate maturity to generate such a blend.
Following fermentation the wine was matured in a single large old French oak cask or “foudre” (2500ltrs) for 20 months. A wine of refinement and purity. Aromatically complex, perfumed with high-toned spice, red fruits and ethereal dried flower, herb, earth and gamey complexity. A clear demonstration of the magic and innate complexity of old vine fruit, it is startling in its clarity, purity and restraint. Pure and fresh with herb laced red fruits on attack that evolve into earthier dried and woody spices. Has a supple and open front palate that gains focus, freshness and line as fine, firm tannin and ripe acids draw the palate out. Fine, dry, lingering finish” Very Limited
