“Our visit to Pittnauer a couple of years was an absolute revelation. This is a producer at the cutting edge of red wine production in all of Europe. It has been 15 years since Brigitte and Gerhard Pittnauer (known locally as “Pitti”) took over winery in Gols near Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, at the eastern extremity of Austria bordering with Hungary. With only 3.8 hectares of vineyards they took over from Gerhard’s parents and dared to jump in at the proverbial deep end. In 2001 the construction of the striking and individually designed production hall in the middle of the vineyards allowed for a “quantum jump” as far as quality and quantity is concerned. Today the Gerhard & Brigitte Pittnauer Winery ranks among Austria’s rising red wine producers. Look out for the truly amazing old vine and single vineyard St Laurent wines. Biodynamic producer “ Notes by Importer Patrick Walsh of Cellarhand.
Delicious medium bodied red blend of Austria’s native red varieties, Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt. This fine 2018 red reminds me of a cross between the strawberry raspberry characters of Pinot with some of sangiovese’s wild herbs and refreshing acidity. What a riot of red fruit ..Yum!
Review of 2016
90 points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine “An intriguing touch of salty licorice hangs over the nose before black-cherry notes reassert themselves. They burst on the juicy palate and deliver dense but easy pleasure, bags of fruit and tons of charm. This is medium bodied, dry, with a slight tannic grip. The finish is juiciness itself.”
