Description
Longhop is a winemaking venture between 2 high school friends, Tim Freeland and Dominic Torzi (of leading Eden Valley winery, Torzi Matthews) and these guys continue to shake things up as far as the quality to price wine ratio goes…this wine (sourced from 3 Adelaide Plains vineyards) is extraordinary for the price.
The former Gawler high school mates seized upon an idea in 2002 of salvaging some of the last remaining old vine vineyards in the Adelaide Plains and making icon wines from that region. Vineyards were secured, old vines a priority. Their small band of growers have since embraced the ideal of delivering premium grapes in order to showcase the power and rich fruit flavours the Adelaide Plains and adjoining Mt Lofty Ranges has to offer. The wines are made with minimal intervention. Open fermented and basket pressed. No fining or filtration is used prior to bottling.
Fruit from Gawler River and Angle Vale (Spanish & French clones) 50+ year old vines, work seamlessly bringing dark cherries, raspberry, plum and dried herb. Impressive depth from the medium bodied wine, finishing with gentle tannin and supple spice.
Cold soak prior to whole berry & partial whole bunch ferment in five ton open top fermenters, soft pump overs and minimal hand plunging. On skins for six days, basket pressed into young seasoned oak with ferment finishing off in barrel. Matured in French oak, two rackings prior to bottling.
About the 2022 vintage from the winemaker “2022 was an excellent vintage. Mild weather conditions across the growing season with good winter and spring rains set up the vines. Mild conditions continued into harvest allowing full ripening and flavour development at lower baumes. Overall outstanding quality.”
91 points, Gary Walsh, Wine Front “Raspberry, hazelnut, a bit gluey, but also has perfume, along with mint and some spice. It’s medium to full-bodied, all poached strawberry and raspberry, a bit edgy and warm in alcohol, but sure-footed with light grainy tannin and a little graphite grip, and I like the nutty slightly umami flavours too. It’s a pleasing wine. strawberry jelly, mint and nuts, with a finish of solid length. Very easy to like.”
