“… Bruno Rocca is without question one of the hottest estates in Barbaresco right now. And my feeling is that Francesco Rocca (Bruno’s son and Luisa’s brother) is just getting started.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
In the late 1950s, Bruno Rocca’s father Francesco, and his wife Maria Adelaide purchased a vineyard in Rabajà and moved there from the centre of Barbaresco. This marked the beginning, in particular for Bruno, who from a very early age began to view the grapes as the true expression of the land. In 1978 Bruno decided to carve out a new direction, rather than selling the grapes to large Barbaresco producers, Bruno began to sell bottled wine on the Italian and world stage. The philosophy of wine as the natural expression of the Barbaresco territory was widely appreciated, and with the estate’s gradual growth came the purchase of new plots of land and the expansion of the cellar, which continues today with Bruno’s children Francesco and Luisa now both closely involved in all aspects of the wine production and sales respectively. Organic farming with certification; 100% estate grown fruit; minimal intervention and sparing use of French oak usually less than 10% new oak across production. The Bruno Rocca company philosophy is clear, as Rocca himself affirms: “Wine is the mirror and soul of the ground, and the territory, if protected and defended, it will never let you down.”
100% Nebbiolo from younger Barbaresco vines,10 months French oak (no new oak). Fralu was named after Bruno’s children Francesco & Luisa.
2021 was an exceptional growing season in Piedmont and Nebbiolo certainly excelled and a season that will be remembered and enjoyed for a long time ahead. Vinification took place in stainless steel for about 12-15 days. 8-12 months in French oak barriques.
Bright ruby red with garnet red reflections. Very wide and intense scent of fruit (raspberry, black cherry). Harmonic depth of fruit, structure of ripe tannins and gorgeous balance.
Wow what a smart ‘baby barbaresco’ we have here!
Reveiws for 2019 … 91pts Monica Larner, Robert Parker: “The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo Fralù is delicate and graceful, showing a simple side of the grape but also leaving a series of hints or a trail of bread crumbs to underline the complexity inherent to the variety. The wine is silky and polished, with pretty highlights of cassis, wild cherry, licorice and ash. It is versatile, accessible and leaves a bella figura no matter what the occasion or meal. This release of about 14,000 bottles is a good value.”
