“… Bruno Rocca is without question one of the hottest estates in Barbaresco right now. And my feeling is that Francesco Rocca (Bruno’s son and Luisa’s brother) is just getting started.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
In the late 1950s, Bruno Rocca’s father Francesco, and his wife Maria Adelaide purchased a vineyard in Rabajà and moved there from the centre of Barbaresco. This marked the beginning, in particular for Bruno, who from a very early age began to view the grapes as the true expression of the land. In 1978 Bruno decided to carve out a new direction, rather than selling the grapes to large Barbaresco producers, Bruno began to sell bottled wine on the Italian and world stage. The philosophy of wine as the natural expression of the Barbaresco territory was widely appreciated, and with the estate’s gradual growth came the purchase of new plots of land and the expansion of the cellar, which continues today with Bruno’s children Francesco and Luisa now both closely involved in all aspects of the wine production and sales respectively. Organic farming with certification ; 100% estate grown fruit; minimal intervention and sparing use of French oak usually less than 10% new oak across production. The Bruno Rocca company philosophy is clear, as Rocca himself affirms: “Wine is the mirror and soul of the ground, and the territory, if protected and defended, it will never let you down.”
Antonio Galloni in Vinous Media about the 2021 vintage in Oct 23: “Barbaresco’s Soaring 2020s & 2021s Francesco Rocca is one of the most thoughtful
young growers in Barbaresco. That shows in wines that are increasingly nuanced. The 2020 and 2021 vintages are both strong. I find the 2020s a bit more open, while the 2021s show quite a bit of reserve. The wines see 35-40 days on the skins, very much
on the long side. Aging is about 16 months in cask, a bit less than in some recent years. The Riservas see one more week on the skins, with submerged cap maceration, and three additional months in cask. In 2020, the Nebbiolo harvest started on
September 29 and ended on October 9, while in 2021 harvest started on October 8 and ended on the 13, which is late by today’s standards.”
An exceptional growing season in 2021 has delivered a superb wine. 100% Nebbiolo crafted from vineyards in Barbaresco’s Neive including Curra & Fausoni. Clay soils with sand.12-16 months used French oak. A gorgeous Barbaresco offering here.. Dense with intensity of fruit (blackberries, black cherries and plums), overtones of slightly withered rose and violet petals and spices. Plenty of more-ish structure that will reward cellaring and or decanting.
92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media ” The 2021 Barbaresco is a very pretty wine with lovely forward fruit and fine balance. It shows terrific depth,
but still needs time to develop its aromatic presence. I very much admire the textural depth and overall intensity here. Drinking window: 2025-2033.”
93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: ” This red strikes a pose between elegance and power. Strawberry, cherry, rose, mineral and herb aromas and flavors are lifted by vibrant acidity and chalky tannins. Offers excellent mineral length. Best from 2027 through 2045.”
