“… Bruno Rocca is without question one of the hottest estates in Barbaresco right now. And my feeling is that Francesco Rocca (Bruno’s son and Luisa’s brother) is just getting started.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
In the late 1950s, Bruno Rocca’s father Francesco, and his wife Maria Adelaide purchased a vineyard in Rabajà and moved there from the centre of Barbaresco. This marked the beginning, in particular for Bruno, who from a very early age began to view the grapes as the true expression of the land. In 1978 Bruno decided to carve out a new direction, rather than selling the grapes to large Barbaresco producers, Bruno began to sell bottled wine on the Italian and world stage. The philosophy of wine as the natural expression of the Barbaresco territory was widely appreciated, and with the estate’s gradual growth came the purchase of new plots of land and the expansion of the cellar, which continues today with Bruno’s children Francesco and Luisa now both closely involved in all aspects of the wine production and sales respectively. Organic farming with certification ; 100% estate grown fruit; minimal intervention and sparing use of French oak usually less than 10% new oak across production. The Bruno Rocca company philosophy is clear, as Rocca himself affirms: “Wine is the mirror and soul of the ground, and the territory, if protected and defended, it will never let you down.”
Antonio Galloni about the new vintage “‘I was quite impressed with these new releases from Bruno Rocca and his son Francesco. Bruno likes to say he is not in charge, but he is ever present and engaged. I was especially taken with the 2020s. The wines show another step in Francesco Rocca’s development as one of the most thoughtful young growers in Barbaresco. One of the most recent changes here is the decision to shorten time in barrel. The 2020 vineyard designates were bottled with about three months less in oak, while the straight Barbaresco was bottled about six months earlier than normal. As a result, the wines seem to offer greater focus and purity of fruit, which is a big positive.’
About the vintage: Following a temperate, dry winter, spring began mild and sunny. May and into June however saw very wet and unstable conditions. Early vigour meant green harvest was critical to avoid over-cropping but generally conditions were ideal, with the rain preventing any water stress. The harvest of whites began early September, followed by dolcetto. Barbera and nebbiolo were delayed by a drop in temperatures in the first half of September. Both immediately showed superb sugars and acids, and ripe tannins. 2020 can be classified as extremely good with points of excellence, especially for the medium to longer term ageing wines.
100% Nebbiolo made from vineyards in the hill of Barbaresco in Neive including Curra & Fausoni. Clay soils with sand.12-16 months used French oak. A gorgeous Barbaresco offering here.. Dense with fruit (blackberries, black cherries and plums), overtones of slightly withered rose and violet petals and spices.
92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media “The 2020 Barbaresco is a terrific entry-level wine from Bruno Rocca, if that term can even be used here. The warm season yielded a Barbaresco with lovely forward fruit, silky tannins and tons of upfront appeal. It’s an ideal wine for restaurants or consumers looking for something delicious to drink with minimal cellaring. The 2020 spent 11 months in oak, quite a bit less than the 16-18 of the past, which preserves a good deal of freshness.
