Description
Babo wines are made by Australian Justin Bubb (an honorary Italian having spent the last six years making wine in Italy and who splits his time between Tuscany and Tasmania at Pooley Wines) with the idea of utilising the best fruit possible to produce wines of elegance and purity with a focus on vibrancy of fruit, texture and balanced complexity. All the wines are made at a small wine making facility in Empoli. All of these wines are very well made while still speaking clearly of their origins. They offer exceptional value, and are bottled under screwcap. The BABO philosophy is simple. Source the finest regional fruit from Italy, to produce wines of elegance and purity with a focus on vibrancy, texture and balanced complexity.
About this wine: The latest wine from Justin Bubb and the Babo team is a Langhe Nebbiolo, sourced from vineyards near the famed town of Castiglione Falletto in Barolo. The sites mainly face southwest between 300 and 400 metres above sea level. The 2021 vintage came with challenges: spring frosts affected yields, and the summer months were warm, but the fruit quality at the end of the season was fantastic. The fruit was handpicked, destemmed and macerated for about a week with twice-daily pumpovers. To preserve freshness and bright red-fruit appeal, the wine matured in concrete tanks for just a short period.
Babo’s knack for wines of bright, easy-going charm is writ large over this Langhe Nebbiolo. It’s a fantastic addition to this brilliant range. Dusty floral notes and bright, pure red berry fruits join subtle earth and spice notes on the complex nose. The palate is just as good: juicy with firm but open tannins and an easy, drink-me-now appeal.
2021 was an exceptional growing season in Piedmont for Nebbiolo! Bright purple and garnet highlights. On the nose delightful floral bouquet. Medium body, great depth of red and black fruit, a little tar, roses and spice. Lovely weighted Nebbiolo tannin, balance and a long persistent finish. Viva L’Italia ! This is Delicious and cries out for fine italian food.
93 points, Tom Kline, Wine Pilot “Fruit from mostly south-west facing sites in Castiglione Falletto. Handpicked, destemmed, 6-8 day maceration at 26 degrees with twice daily pump-overs before aging for six months in concrete tanks. Deep-set aromas of dark cherry, plum, dried cranberry, and gentle cinnamon spice straight off, followed by tar and ripe red florals. Some nice complexity, prettiness, and depth of aroma at this price point. The palate has nice fruit weight, intensity and prettiness, too – red rose, morello cherry, red plum and cranberry are wrapped up in very assertive powdery tannins and red floral acidity. Nice length, too. This is a winner at the price point, with good complexity, varietal character, and firm structure.”
90 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Red fruits, and really quite dusty and peppery, along with some floral notes. It’s medium-bodied, tannin has a gentle chew to it, and a whole lot of dusty spice cupboard character, but it’s fresh ,with some cranberry crunch to acidity, and a dry and gently ferrous finish of solid length. It’s maybe picked on the cusp of ripeness, though it does have energy and plenty of character. Lively. Good to drink. Frisky!”
