“What I love about the wines is that Jennie Gardner and Colin McBryde can pour just as much passion into producing serious wines with serious labels and serious sense of terroir (Adelina) as they do producing a range of fun, everyday drinking wines with gloriously garish pulp fiction labels …” Max Allen, The Future Makers
The Adelina vineyards are situated in Spring Farm Valley, just south of the township of Clare in SA. Their neighbours include the vineyards of Wendouree, Aberfeldy and Sevenhill Cellars. The small Adelina plantings were originally established around 1910; mostly Shiraz and Grenache with small plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is right next door to Birk’s Wendouree so we know the terroir is good! The Gardner family has owned the Spring Farm Estate, which is the site of both the Adelina winery and vineyards, since 1986. Prior to the inception of Adelina Wines in 2000, the property was managed by Will and Elaine Gardner, and the fruit was sold to Tim Adams. In 2002, Col McBryde and Jen Gardner, Will and Elaine’s daughter, took over responsibility for the vineyards and launched Adelina wines which are made exclusively from the Estate vineyards. The pair has been involved in winemaking and research since the mid-90s.
Certified organic. There are plenty of pseudo field blends on the market, but this is the real deal and features Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Ugni Blanc, Roussanne and Carignan, all randomly grafted in 2015 on a single block of the Adelina Estate vineyard. 2021 is just the fourth release from this organically farmed parcel and, again, judging by the quality, this Gardner-McBryde brainwave has proved to be an inspired decision.
In true field blend style, the grapes were harvested and fermented as one. Destemming was followed by an uncrushed co-fermentation and maceration for 11 days. The wine was then pressed off into neutral 700-litre oak for nine months before bottling. A fascinating wine and, with only 40 dozen available, it won’t last long. It has that classic Adelina medium-bodied, effortless thing going on: it’s so balanced in weight and texture and over-delivers in flavour. Fresh red fruits and warm spices accompany bright, driven acidity, crisp tannins and a subtle mineral touch. The whites contribute aromatic lift and lighten the tread, while the flavours cascade and build towards the back palate. It is ready to go but will only improve as the chorus becomes a choir.
94 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “A true ‘field blend’. Hooray! Red fruits, a sort of honey/white flower top note, subtle sweet soil-like earthiness too. It’s light to medium-bodied, plenty of crunch and energy, tight, with a stony feel to tannin, maybe some orange peel and cherry pip, with a fresh finish of excellent length and vigour. Very interesting. Really like its dryness and point of difference, in both flavour and texture.”
93 points, Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com “A bold wine, in that it is a proprietary blend from a single parcel originally planted in 1976 to cabernet sauvignon and grafted across in 2015 to a randomized block of shiraz, grenache, mataro, ugni blanc, roussanne and carignan. It is athletic, fresh and red-fruited with some sauvage and florals on the nose. Taut tannins clutch bright red-berry flavors, the acidity sits bright and there’s unwavering drive. Try this from 2024.”
