“Achaval Ferrer sits at the summit of Argentina wine producers” to quote Jay Miller, Robert Parker’ s right hand man. A group of friends from Argentina and Italy. Santiago Achaval Becu and Manuel Ferrer joined forces in 1998 with Italian winemakers Roberto Cipresso and Tiziano Siviero to explore the terroirs and old vineyards of Mendoza. Starting at Finca Altamira, a 100 year old vineyard about one hour’ s drive to the south in the Uco Valley at La Consulta, the 102 year old vines of Finca Bella Vista at Perdriel were added in 2002. Malbec is of course the star here and Archaval Ferrer’ s wines are all about finesse and balance not the big tannic styles widely seen. Their hallmark is their silky mouthfeel and seamless palate. Old vines produce miniscule yields of intense, perfumed, complex fruit balanced with the use of french oak ( 9 mths in 2 year old barrels)
Take Jay Miller’s advice … the best way to discover the pleasures of Achaval Ferrer are through the entry level Malbec, sourced from the 3 vineyards. This is the benchmark regional expression of Mendoza Malbec.. dark fruit and spice, mouth filling, elegant and long.
2022 is here following a warmer growing season … rich, ripe depth of fruit with gorgeously ripe tannins. Wow very smart offering is this one… Viva Argentina !

Vinous Media 93 pts : “The 2021 Malbec Mendoza is 50% from the Uco Valley, 40% from Luján de Cuyo and 10% from Medrano, all in Mendoza, and spent nine months in used French oak. Purple in color. The vivid nose delivers fresh plum, sour cherry, violets and a bouquet of herbs accompanied by hints of balsam. Slightly indulgent in the mouth, it’s juicy in spite of its volume and grippy tannins. A well-rounded wine with hints of lavender perfume on the long, bold finish.”
James Suckling 93 pts: ”Plenty of fruit on the nose with a nice reductive and peppery edge. Dark cherries and strawberries with spiced plums and violets. Firm, flavorful and medium- to full-bodied on the palate with tight, fine-grained tannins. Fresh, fruit-oriented finish.’
