Kym Teusner has turned me right around with this fine cabernet (have never been convinced about Barossa cabernet until now!). Fruit sourced from dry grown vineyard in High Eden Valley (500 metres) to produce cabernet with cascading fruit, layers and fine tannins, structure and texture. Stars aligned for this fine cabernet and we love the price!
Winemaker Kym Teusner about this wine: “Barossa Shiraz holds uber celebrity status, meaning Cabernet Sauvignon is often overlooked. It’s hugely under-rated and there’s a stack I’d be happy to put on the tasting bench to challenge that notion…
“The unique parcel in this wine originates from David Forrest’s vineyard high up in the Eden Valley. At around 400 metres above sea level, one of the highest points in the Barossa region, this vineyard produces truly exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon – indeed some of the best I have had the pleasure to work with. It’s pretty tough country up there and the lean bony soils keep the yields low and the berries small….hallmarks of flavour intensity. To create a slightly richer style, I decided from the 2014 vintage to introduce a parcel of Barossa Valley Cabernet from the Riebke’svineyards at Ebenezer to the blend…and I’m very happy with the result. The Barossa Valley component provides structure and power, a great partner for the classic Cabernet elegance and a sweet cassis fruit core of the Eden Valley fruit.
“The Eden Valley fruit takes the lead in the wine…plenty of lifted notes and blue fruits, creating a really elegant wine that has real energy about it. The Barossa Valley fruit gives the wine lovely rich dark black fruits…but the delicious savoury tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon still shine through, making this such a bloody delicious drink! Here’s to the unwavering dedication of blokes like ‘Spog’ Forrest. A true gentleman of the Barossa.”
Review of 2020 … 93 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “Sourced from 85/15% Barossa/Eden Valleys. There’s just a splash of shiraz (2%) in this cabernet sauvignon, aged in old French oak barriques for 15 months. Supple, pure berry fruits in dark and black shades are dotted with baking spice, sage, earth and light cedar notes. Juicy and displaying an air of effortless drinkability on the palate. Tight, grainy tannin adds structure and form and the finish lingers nicely. Wonderful value.”
90 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Inviting. Generous. Fruit-forward. You get the idea. This is a curranty, free-flowing cabernet with herb and earth notes ins modest measure but with juicy, berried fruit doing the bulk of the talking. It’s uncomplicated but it’s effective. It slips down with alarming ease.”
