Description
From one of the most prestigious estates in the “super-Tuscan” zone of Bolgheri. Blend of Merlot 50%, Cabernet Franc 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Syrah 10%.
Usually from two new younger vineyards planted in 2012 and 2015 (‘Casa Nuova’ and ‘I Sommi’). One is a rocky hillside vineyard and the other is quite sandy. This is supplemented by fruit that does not make the grade for the Paleo, Scrio and Messorio (‘Puntone’ planted in 1994, ‘Vignone’ in 1999, ‘Casa Nuova’ planted in 1998-2009). Fermentation is done in stainless steel – 15 days. Press and decant for 1 month. Then 80% goes into old barriques and 20% is held in concrete for about 10 months and then the wine is blended.
2021 is an outstanding release.. dream growing season has delivered the goods.
“Pure and expressive, this red features cherry, raspberry and blackberry flavors augmented by iron, spice and light herb accents. Sleek and elegant, with a succulent profile and excellent persistence on the finish. Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2042.” 95 points, Bruce Sanderson – Wine Spectator
The Le Macchiole 2021 Bolgheri Rosso is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine kicks it up from the start with bold but also very fresh fruit tones of dark cherry and blackberry. The quality of the primary fruit is spot-on, especially in this balanced vintage, and you get fun, punchy flavors to pair with grilled meats and a side a French Fries. The wine has enough structure, acidity and elegant tannins to stand up to the fat in those foods. Drink 2023 – 2030.” 93+ points Monica Larner – Wine Advocate (Jun 01, 2023)
“The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso gorgeous wine shows how compelling this vintage is on the Tuscan coast. Effusive and deep, the 2021 is beautifully layered from start to finish. Gentle touches of mocha, new leather, cedar, tobacco and dried flowers add complexity throughout. Drink 2023-2029.’ 92 points, Antonio Galloni – Vinous
“Attractive aromas of dark berries with crushed walnuts, spicy herbs and dusty earth undertones. Medium- to full-bodied with a firm grip of tannins, that are fine and polished. Juicy acidity cuts through the linear finish. Fresh with stony minerality coming through in the finish. Better in a year or two.” 93 points, James Suckling
Rich offering with elegance and freshness. The black cherry and currant fruit are deep and rich but stay fresh and vibrant right on through the very long, silky, fresh finish.
