About this wine from the winemaker: “Cabernet from the Great Southern is a rare jewel and this wine is a sublime expression. In line with the Distinguished Sites concept, selected fruit from our Abercrombie vineyard, located in the Mount Barker subregion of Great Southern, is crafted to highlight the distinctive varietal and regional qualities of our best sites. Planted to the Houghton
clones of Cabernet in 1976, in this cooler, continental climate, the vineyard sits on a north facing, elevated slope where it captures ample sun to fully ripen Cabernet Sauvignon.
“Vintage 2021 was shaped in late 2020 as a great vintage with slightly lower than average rainfall over the spring period ensuring vines had good fruit set and plenty of reserves for the growing season. Warmer than average late spring and early summer allowed for good canopy growth and balanced crops, projecting healthy yields and good quality. Moving into the ripening season the effects of a La Niña weather pattern created strong weather events that brought higher than average rainfall events. These rains freshened up canopies and reduced the need for irrigation which was welcome, especially in the Great Southern region, and even more so for late ripening varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. For those who could pick around the rain events there were some strong wines. Overall, this was a vintage for the well prepared and brave – Howard Park was both!
“In this profound expression of Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon, dark hedgerow berries interlace with cassis, prune and black olive, creating a concentrated and brooding bouquet. Accents of nutmeg, anise seed, fresh soil, mocha, and dusty gravel add depth and intrigue. The palate unravels as flavours of mulberry, blood plum and a hint of baked raspberry tart are embraced by fine, chalky tannins. Balanced acidity and a delicate touch of French oak lend this wine intricate layers of complexity and refinement. Although easy to enjoy in its bright fruited youth, this wine shows great propensity to age elegantly, rewarding the patient custodian. ”
92 points, Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot “Delicious purity to this 2021 Scotsdale Cabernet Sauvignon with effortless leafy cassis aromas enhanced by a fine cedar lift. A rich bed of well defined flavours are underpinned by chalky acidity and sinewy tannins. While understated right now it certainly has the integrity to build nicely in bottle.”
