Howard Park, one of Western Australia’s pioneering wine families with a 30 year history and two generations of tireless work of the Burch family, they specialise in the state’s premier grape-growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. They are also part of Australia’s First Families of Wine (AFFW), an exciting collective of 12 multi-generational family-owned wine producers.
Winemaker Janice McDonald and the family are still celebrating after winning Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year for 2018. Peter Forrestal, of Gourmet Traveller said “Janice McDonald is an astounding winemaker: demanding of herself and others; rigorous; painstaking in her attention to detail.”
Margaret River is Australia’s most spectacular wine region with breathtaking coastline, Karri forests and maritime climate perfectly suited to premium grape growing. 100% estate grown fruit Howard Park makes beautiful wines with depth of fruit, balance and structure that overdeliver across the board.
This wine is part of Howard Park’s Distinguished Sites range. Cabernet Sauvignon from their Leston vineyard, located in the heart of Margaret River, is crafted to highlight the distinctive varietal and regional qualities of their best sites. In the temperate climate of Margaret River, Cabernet Sauvignon is at home. Here the maritime influences temper the extremes of seasons, and allow Cabernet Sauvignon to thrive.
About the 2018 vintage from the winemaker “The outcomes of a challenging vintage have exceeded expectations. Whites have retained purity and vibrancy, and the reds, stunning concentration, beautifully soft tannins and a silky mouthfeel in a finer, more elegant frame …
Suggestive of ripeness and opulence; notes of rich plum, blueberry pie, violets, cocoa and freshly dried savoury herbs fill the glass. The palate is luxuriant and seamless, unfurling flavours of concentrated blackcurrant, poached red berries, vanilla, mocha, caramel and anise. This rich and delightful combination of cabernet fruit, cradled in fine grained French oak and supported by silky, ultra-supple fruit tannins will drink well for years to come. Drink now or cellar for 7 to 10 years.”
95 points, Erin Larkin for James Halliday “Fruit from the Leston Vineyard, Blocks 8 and 9. Houghton clone, planted 2008. Matured in French oak for 18 months (25% new). Raspberry, red dirt, pomegranate, gravel, purple flowers, graphite, salted plum, red licorice and ferrous notes, too. This is very elegant. The fruit has wonderful intensity and concentration. It remains a very restrained, medium-bodied style of cabernet – this wine rarely pushes the richter for volume – and through the lens of the ripe and powerful 2018 vintage, it has a boost of the very best kind.”
