Description

One of the oldest and most respected names in Chablis, this branch of the Moreau family is headed by Christian and now his son Fabien who is the winemaker and manager.

Possessing magnificent vineyard holdings built up in some of the very best vineyard areas of Chablis by the family over generations (including nearly 8 hectares out of Chablis’ total 92 hectares of Grand cru), this small but remarkable estate has in just a few years established itself as one of the leading producers of Chablis producing consistently outstanding wines.

With relatively small (but very well sited) holdings in Petit, village and 1er cru Chablis, the highlights here are undoubtedly the amazing range of Grand cru vineyards including one single holding of approximately 3 hectares in Les Clos as well as .41 hectares of Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos plus slightly smaller holdings in Valmur, Blanchots and Vaudesir. A combination of exceptional vineyard sites, old vines, brilliant winemaking and fastidious care in every step of production has resulted in these wines being regarded as amongst the very best produced in Chablis. These are wines of precision, crystal clear typicity, and elegance, that will age classically while enabling tremendous enjoyment throughout their lives.

“The quality here is again so good that I’m tempted to say that Chablis has yet another leading light to add to the usual stars of Raveneau and Dauvissat”.   Burghound.com

From vines averaging 40 years old. Aged 100% in stainless steel tanks. Comes mostly from very old vines situated in Les Pargues on the hill located between the premier cru sites of Montee de Tonnerre and Vaillons. This terroir has historically always been very highly regarded by locals and produces wines of extra depth and character.

Although 2017 presented some challenges producing the lowest yields in their history, fruit quality was excellent.  As Fabien said to Burghound last year “…  the fruit basically couldn’t have been any cleaner. It was also ripe with good sugar and acid levels and thus we had no trouble with either fermentation. One of the aspects that is interesting about the wines is that they continue to improve month by month and while it’s obviously still early, we like the style of the 2017s a lot. In sum, we would call them very promising.”

Burghound 87-89, Issue 72 “An airy and agreeably pure nose combines notes of petrol, iodine and white and yellow-fleshed fruit compote. The succulent but punchy middle weight flavors exhibit both good intensity and reasonably good detail on the saline, clean and appealingly dry finish.”

88-90, Neal Martin, Vinous Media “The 2017 Chablis has a fresh, rather austere and malic bouquet with Granny Smith apple and light nettle aromas. The palate is fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, nicely balanced with a poised and quite saline finish. 88-90 points, Drink 2020-2024.”
